She's back... and this time it's personal
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that the past little while has been a rough time to try to process […gestures broadly…] everything that’s been happening in the world. I decided to work through it with a slightly non-linear film about sewing a bra. You know, as one does.
Except it’s not really about the sewing, but I bet you already figured that out long before the (aggressively and unapologetically) visually unsubtle third act.
I referenced a couple of videos by Nicole Rudolph, including her latest about researching and making a 1910s tuxedo jacket, in which she notes that certain modern menswear conventions took hold less because they’re actually popular or interesting than because they’re easier and cheaper to mass-produce that way. She makes a similar point in another video about poorly fitting shoes:
“Shoemaking has changed over the years not to necessarily make shoes more comfortable in most cases, but to make them easier and more consistent in their production…”
In other words, rather than making a system that can produce ‘good’ shoes, factories redefined ‘good’ shoes according to what the system can produce.
Plus ça change, eh?
This one is dedicated to my friend Monique, who, whenever I tell her I feel lost and useless, reminds me that I know how to make a bra. 🌙✨
Until next time,
xoxo
