studio tour
I have ascended to the rank of second-year student at comic book school, which means I am allotted a desk in the senior studio. I picked a spot right next to the door so I can say hello to all my classmates as they enter, which, as my housemate pointed out, is the most Maia thing to do.
Seniors are issued a height-adjustable table, but I struck a deal with admin to replace mine with a drafting table that I nabbed from my friend Michael when he graduated in May. I am TRYING to have good ergonomic practices because I can already feel my body side-eyeing me hard for my years of scrunching myself up into tangles.
I lost the chair lottery, so I don’t… have a chair? My chair plan (approved by my classmates) is to just borrow one of the Good Chairs from one of the other senior desks anytime I’m in the studio and there’s a vacant one. This is going well so far!
Oh, and because of who I am as a person, my first order of business, before I even got my desk into the studio, was to set up a communal tea station.

I am also currently nurturing some plant cuttings, and when they’ve rooted enough to get potted I’ll have a few plant babies hanging up above my desk!
My desk is right by my friend Edea’s desk, and she has an aquarium! It’s like having a class pet! I usually start my studio time by saying hello to Edea’s snails and microfauna.
If all goes well, I will also be doing actual work at my desk (not just drinking tea and admiring mollusks), and as such, I have brought over my little paint palette and jar of brushes.
And I have some important reference materials!
Okay, time for me to actually use my desk — my first assignment of the term is to make 16 pages of comics and I’ve got just a week left to finish the last three pages, plus prepare for TwiSt (I’m tabling!) and the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival (I’m leading a school field trip).
Onwards!
