reflecting on last year's goals and setting new goals for 2026

I had a lot of goals last year, and if we’re measuring things in a pass/fail binary, I flopped pretty hard in 2025. But if I relax my grip on perfection and honor progress instead: well, I accomplished a lot, actually? (Also, like… fuck binaries.) Especially considering my year also included writing an entire graphic novel and assembling a pitch package, self-publishing five mini-comics, graduating with an MFA, working very long hours at wonderful but emotionally intensive job, being locked in mortal combat with a barren rental market for a third of the year, and traveling back to the west coast for an entire month. Plus, you know, that whole unraveling-of-the-social-fabric-as-my-country-freefalls-into-a-fascist-oligarchy thing we’ve all been dealing with. 🫠

Here’s the rundown of what I set out to do in January of last year, as compared to what I actually managed to do. Yes, that’s right, it’s PLANNER TOUR TIME. Buckle up.

Goal: make 12 new soup recipes I haven’t made before.
Result: made 10 (plus, like, a lot of familiar recipes)

a page spread in Maia's planner. On the left, a long list of soups Maia made, labeled "Soup Watch 2025." On the right, 12 outlines of bowls and pots, 10 of which are colored and labeled with the names of ten different soup recipes.
peanut butter ramen and peanut lime ramen count as two different soups, right? …RIGHT???

Goal: knit nine things
Result: Kind of hit this one? Although only eight spaces are filled in, two of these were multiples (ten mini-scarf bookmarks, two matching turquoise-and-purple cardigans). Also technically that last sweater didn’t get finished until like January 4th but you know what, close enough, I’m counting it in the 2025 logbook.

a 9-by-9 square grid drawn on a page in Maia's planner. The title at the top of the page reads "knitting log 2025." Eight of the nine boxes contain drawings of knitted items: three sweaters, two cardigans, two hats, and a handful of miniature scarves slash bookmarks. Each box includes information about the pattern and yarn used. The ninth and final box is blank.
You can see actual photos of almost all of these on my Ravelry

Goal: Read 50 books
Result: I read 40 books. Unsurprisingly, most of them were graphic novels.

a drawing of a snake with 40 colorful stripes alternating with black stripes. The snake's head says 2025, and handwritten text at the top says "book snake" and at the bottom "LeVar!" (which is the snake's name, after LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow, of course)
I thought he’d be longer 🥲

I did keep up with knitting a stripe for every book I read, though!

a photo of an in-progress knitted snake laying on top of two graphic novels that Maia had just finished reading: Meal by Blue Delliquanti & Soleil Ho and Ribbon Skirt by Cameron Mukwa. The snake and books are laying on top of a brightly colored rag rug. The snake has 15 stripes, representing 15 books read so far at the time the photo was taken.
I didn’t learn how to do jogless color transitions between stripes until I was like three quarters of the way through the year, haha

Here’s the genre breakdown for the stripes, in case you were wondering what the colors meant!

a notecard has eight pieces of yarn attached, representing the following genres: fantasy, scifi, general fiction, horror, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, middle grade. I know middle grade is an age range not a genre but I read middle grade specifically for *RESEARCH* so don't come for me
I know middle grade isn’t technically a genre but I have my reasons ((market research)) 😤

Look at him, isn’t he good!!

LeVar the Book Snake is curled up on the edge of a faded white floral print armchair. He has gold button eyes and many colors of stripes separated by black stripes.
we did have to immediately hide LeVar from our cat, who is desperate to eat him, for some reason

Undecided what (if anything) I’ll do to log my reading progress this year, besides record titles on Storygraph. Got a fun suggestion that will take me less than 20 minutes per book? (I don’t have it in me to like, paint a brick of each cover or whatever, low-effort suggestions only.)

Goal: Stretch & Sketch a minimum of five minutes a day at least three days a week
Result: Uhhhh… whatever this is?

two daily progress trackers on one page of Maia's planner: one for stretching, and one for sketching. The one for stretching is pretty well filled out throughout the year, but the one for sketching is very skewed towards the front half of the year, with only a scattering of days marked after May.
as soon as school ended I stopped drawing, lol

BINGO CARD

Goal: get a bingo. Stretch goal: get a blackout!
Result: I got TWO bingos! And several of the unmarked things are in progress ;) I had a great time trying to fill out my 2025 Bingo card, would recommend if you’re looking for an alternative to traditional new year’s resolutions

a page of Maia's planner showing a handwritten bingo card, where each square in the five-by-five grid lists something Maia hoped to do in 2025, such as "eat a fruit I've never had" and "launch a website." Many of the squares are checked off with colorful dot stickers, but nine of them are unmarked.
Look how many babies I held!!!!

…I almost immediately regretted putting non-fun things on my Bingo card (taxes, I’m looking at you), so this year’s Bingo card is strictly Fun Things.

Maia's 2026 bingo card in her planner includes four international travel goals and a variety of crafting and food-making goals. Each square has a little illustration to go with it.
several of these things are already in motion ;)

I also bullied talked my housemates into making a bingo card for our house, and we brainstormed our list while on a spontaneous road trip to the Ice Castles in Woodstock, NH a couple of weeks ago. V, as our house’s designated Chart Maker, drew it up for us and slapped it up onto the fridge.

a beautifully drawn bingo card that V drew says Four Aces Bingo at the top, and lists 25 things we hope to do in the coming year. V has added a cute little illustration for every square.
don’t worry mom, “trespass” just means “go into an old abandoned barn and take some cool artsy photos.” Also please excuse the redacted names, didn’t want to put our intended guests on blast

INTRODUCING a NEW TRACKER: Baked Goods Counter!! (honorable mention for reprising the knitting log counter as well)

a spread in Maia's planner. On the left, a knitting log with spaces for nine items; the first is already filled in because Maia already knit a hat for their housemate V, although it's not drawn yet. On the right, a baked goods counter, which features illustrations of a muffin, a scone, a cookie, a pie, small handpies, and a loaf of bread, with some blank spaces for additional drawings of as-yet-unbaked items. There are a few tally marks already, because Maia has already baked four dozen muffins and three dozen scones.
this is a replacement for the very unbeautiful baked goods counter I was keeping on our fridge whiteboard. Top contender for new use of the whiteboard is to record Dad of the Day, a verbal household award given out when one of us does a task like mow the lawn or call the utility company or repair a broken bowl

The rest of my 2026 planner looks pretty much the same as last year’s! I’ve been noodling on formats for several years and I finally hit cruising altitude 😎

May your coming year be more hopes and successes than horrors and suckage. Count the little things. Be soft with yourself and fierce toward injustice. I love you <3
