A note on today's edition: Several desks — Ebonyi state-specific developments, FCT & Diaspora Igbo affairs, and deeper Business & Economy coverage — did not turn up stories meeting our 24–48 hour recency threshold this morning. Rather than fill those slots with stale material, we are flagging the gap here and will fold in fresh reporting as it lands. Today's edition leans heaviest on the active flood advisory, security items from Delta and Rivers, and state-house developments in Enugu and Imo.

BREAKING NEWS
ABUJA / REGIONAL — SEPT 18–22, 2026

NiHSA flood advisory active across Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi as riverine waters rise

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency's national flood advisory, issued September 18, remains in force through September 25, warning of high riverine flood risk across 15 states including Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi.

The advisory warns that more than 8,000 communities and 4,500 schools across 15 states face elevated flood risks between 19 and 25 September. Communities along the River Niger and its tributaries are among the areas being closely monitored.

Director-General Umar Mohammed said rising river stages tied to upstream discharge points — including gauges on the Cross River — put schools, markets, farmland and religious buildings in floodplain communities at risk, and urged residents in low-lying areas to move to higher ground.

Why It Matters: This is a live, region-wide risk window that overlaps directly with our highest-priority states. Communities in Anambra's riverine LGAs and Imo's flood-prone corridors should be checking evacuation routes now, not after water rises.

WARRI AREA, DELTA STATE — REPORTED SEPT 21–22, 2026
One killed, house burnt as Itsekiri communities clash in Delta
A clash between Itsekiri communities in Delta State left one person dead and a house razed, according to reporting that surfaced in the last day. Details on the specific flashpoint and security response are still emerging.

Why It Matters: Delta's Warri-axis communal tensions have a history of escalating quickly; this is a story we're watching for security-agency response and casualty confirmation in the next cycle.

DESK REPORTS

Anambra
NNEWI
Heavy rains expose drainage gaps in Nnewi as homes, businesses take losses

Recent heavy rainfall in Nnewi caused flooding that damaged homes and businesses, with residents pointing to poor drainage infrastructure as the underlying failure. This sits alongside the active NiHSA riverine advisory above.

Why It Matters: Nnewi is a major commercial hub; repeated flood damage there has direct implications for the trading economy the state depends on.

Enugu
ENUGU — THURSDAY, SEPT 18, 2026
Gov. Mbah welcomes home 112 Enugu indigenes fleeing xenophobic attacks in South Africa
Governor Peter Mbah received 77 families — 112 indigenes in total — forced to return home amid ongoing xenophobic violence in South Africa, disbursing ₦77 million (₦1 million per family) and pledging state solidarity as they resettle.

Why It Matters: A concrete state-level response to a diaspora crisis that has been building for months; worth tracking whether other South-East states follow with similar reintegration support.

Imo
OWERRI — ONGOING, REPORTED LAST WEEK
ASUU presses Gov. Uzodimma to intervene as IMSU strike passes 37 days
The Academic Staff Union of Universities' Owerri Zone has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma, as visitor to Imo State University, to convene an urgent meeting with IMSU management and union leaders. The strike — over implementation of the 2025 FG-ASUU agreement — has now stretched past a month, with the union also alleging the university has relied on more than 50 poorly paid casual lecturers amid a decade-long recruitment freeze.

Why It Matters: A month-long shutdown at a major state university affects thousands of students' academic calendars and raises questions about whether the governor's office has been fully briefed, as ASUU alleges.

Delta / Anioma
ASABA

Asaba Affirmed as Capital + Asagba Urges Heritage Preservation + Drug-Free Campaign to Campuses

Chief Emmanuel Afam Eboh, Policy Adviser to Sen Ned Nwoko, dismissed as fake news rumour that Asaba would be replaced as capital of proposed Anioma State, saying the Bill explicitly designates Asaba. Senate President Godswill Akpabio at South-South zonal congress in Asaba reiterated Anioma State will be created with Asaba as capital and Warri as capital of new Delta. In Asaba today Sep 22, Asagba of Asaba Prof Epiphany Azinge urged residents to preserve cultural heritage and sustain peaceful coexistence.

Phase 2 of Drug-Free Delta Campaign continues in tertiary institutions with NDLEA.

Why It Matters: For Ndi Anioma — Asaba, Ibusa, Ogwashi-Uku, Agbor, Kwale — Asaba as capital is identity and investment anchor. Heritage preservation plus drug-free campuses decides whether Anioma State debate is about land and youth, not just maps.Delta's Anioma bloc remains central to the South-East state-creation conversation.

Rivers (Ikwerre/Etche Igbo communities)
PORT HARCOURT
Wike and Fubara hold first face-to-face meeting since 2027 race exit
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike met Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara at Fubara's Port Harcourt residence — their first direct meeting since Fubara withdrew from the 2027 race — as the two continue working through the aftermath of the state's political crisis.

Why It Matters: The Wike-Fubara relationship has driven Rivers' governance stability (or lack of it) for two years; any thaw or renewed tension here has knock-on effects for the state budget and Assembly's functioning.

RIVERS STATE
43 reported dead in illegal fuel-siphoning incident

Reports indicate 43 people died while illegally siphoning fuel in Rivers State. We do not yet have official confirmation of location, cause, or agency response, and are treating the figure as preliminary pending verification.

Why It Matters: If confirmed, this would be among the deadliest fuel-related incidents in the state this year — worth close follow-up rather than repetition of an unverified toll.

WEATHER & FLOOD WATCH

NiHSA's high riverine flood window (Sept 19–25) remains the dominant weather story of the week, with Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi named among the 15 states at elevated risk. Residents on floodplains along Cross River gauge points and connecting waterways are advised to identify higher ground now. This follows an earlier NiMet advisory (Sept 9–11) that had already flagged flash-flood risk for Imo, Abia and Ebonyi specifically.

SECURITY WATCH
The Itsekiri communal clash in Delta and the unverified Rivers fuel-siphoning toll are the two items we're tracking most closely this cycle. Both need confirmation from security agencies before we treat casualty figures as final.

IGBO ORGANIZATIONS

UNIEC Kwenu! Oganiru Ndigbo Bu Nke Anyi

UNIEC Reaffirms Push for Igbo Presidency, Continues Reposition Ndigbo Consultations

As part of the ongoing execution of Project Reposition Ndigbo, the United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC) says it is continuing consultations across the region on development, investment promotion, youth empowerment, and civic engagement.

In a press release issued by the Board of Trustees Secretary, Pastor Michael Obierika, UNIEC restated its commitment to an egalitarian Nigeria — one in which political power is shared among the federating units, Ndigbo included, rather than concentrated in the hands of a few. The organization insisted that the time has come for an Igbo Presidency.

Why It Matters: UNIEC's renewed push signals continued organizing around equitable power-sharing and Igbo political inclusion ahead of national conversations on restructuring and zoning — positioning Project Reposition Ndigbo as an active vehicle for that advocacy rather than a one-off statement.

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY
- Whether state or federal agencies issue an official casualty confirmation on the:

- Rivers fuel-siphoning incident.
- Security-agency response and any arrests tied to the Itsekiri communal clash in Delta.
- Movement on the IMSU strike in Imo as ASUU's pressure on Governor Uzodimma continues.
- Any state-level evacuation orders tied to the NiHSA flood advisory as it runs through September 25.
“Preparedness must be proactive, not reactive.”
Zubaida Umar, Director-General, National Emergency Management Agency
