Anambra
NSCDC arrests 24-year-old over alleged theft of equipment from telecom mast in Awka
AWKA — October 1–2, 2026

The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has arrested Nweke Wisdom, 24, from Izzi South LGA of Ebonyi State, over alleged vandalism and theft of equipment from an MTN telecommunications mast.

The Command says he was arrested at about 7:20am on Thursday, October 1, at Esther Obiakor Estate, Agu-Awka, after a distress call. He was allegedly found with DC and armoured cables removed from the installation. The Command says preliminary investigations suggest he specialises in vandalising masts, that he has made useful confessions, and that he will be charged to court once investigations are complete.

Why It Matters: Telecom infrastructure is classed as critical national infrastructure, and mast vandalism disrupts network service for subscribers across the state.

Law officers begin seven-day warning strike over pay and allowances
ENUGU — October 2, 2026

The Enugu State chapter of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) began a seven-day warning strike at 12am on Friday, October 2, for seven juridical days, according to a strike notice dated September 30.

The association is demanding full harmonisation of law officers' pay with that of magistrates and the restoration, with arrears, of transport, hazard and wardrobe allowances. It also wants bar practising fees and annual bar conference fees paid. Members say their salaries were cut in 2020 and that the hazard allowance was later removed.

The notice directs that no law officer should be on duty, attend court, or visit correctional centres, police stations or other law enforcement agencies on official business during the strike. SaharaReporters said it had asked the state government for comment; no response had been published at the time of writing.

Why It Matters: State counsel handle the government's legal representation, so a prolonged strike can slow state-side prosecutions and civil matters before the courts.

Imo
Follow-up: 10 rescued after gunmen attack two buses on Owerri–Onitsha Road; others still unaccounted for
OWERRI — October 1–3, 2026

Police in Imo State say 10 victims have been rescued and two buses recovered after gunmen attacked the vehicles at about 6:30am on Thursday, October 1, at Umunoha, Mbaitoli LGA. The buses were carrying prospective NYSC corps members and other passengers from Ibadan to Uyo (Akwa Ibom) and Bende (Abia).

Police have not published how many people were abducted, saying the figure was still being verified. A transport company account reported by Pulse puts the combined passenger count at 30, with 20 prospective corps members taken and 10 passengers left behind and later conveyed to camp. If that figure holds, about 10 people remain unaccounted for. Police have not confirmed this.

The Command says tactical teams have been deployed to search for the remaining victims and arrest the abductors, that it is working with the NYSC Directorate to reach families, and that the affected stretch of the expressway has been reopened to traffic. No report of further rescues had been published at the time of writing.

Why It Matters: The attack happened on a key route linking Imo, Anambra and the wider South-East to the South-West, and the victims are young people on their way to national service.

Project Reposition Ndigbo: 7-Point Agenda

UNIEC unveils 7-point “Project Reposition Ndigbo” agenda, backs Anioma State
ASABA — October 3, 2026

The United Igbo Elders Congress (UNIEC) has outlined a seven-point agenda it says is meant to reposition the Igbo nation within Nigeria, following its National Executive Council meeting at the Afrika4Jesus Mission House in Asaba on Saturday.

UNIEC proposes: (1) equitable state creation, with new states in the South-East and the proposed Anioma State cited as an example; (2) parity in local governance, with more local government councils in Igbo states to match allocations in states such as Kano; (3) a revitalised maritime economy, including rehabilitation of the Onitsha River Port and new ports at Oguta, Aguleri and Illah; (4) integrated regional transport, with modern rail links connecting all South-East state capitals; (5) reclaiming Igbo communities in Edo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Kogi and Benue, without further fragmenting the core region; (6) conflict resolution and national healing, including advocacy for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and dialogue with Biafra/IPOB and other separatist groups; and (7) the election of an Igbo President of Nigeria.

The group says the agenda moves from structural reforms (points 1–5) to reconciliation (point 6) and national representation (point 7), and that the list is not final and remains open to additional items.

Why It Matters: The agenda puts the long-running Anioma State demand, which concerns the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State, at the top of a wider push by elders in the region.

13th-month salary bill passed by Assembly, awaiting governor's assent
ASABA — Developing: passed September 15, 2026

The Delta State House of Assembly passed an executive bill on Tuesday, September 15, to give statutory backing to a 13th-month salary for public servants. The bill had been sent by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and was passed after the House suspended relevant standing orders.

As of reports dated September 19–23, the bill was awaiting the governor's assent as he resumed from a short working leave. Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu said the payment would be a full gross monthly salary, would cost about ₦16 billion, and would begin once the governor signs. The governor had earlier said payment would start in December. We found no published report confirming assent at the time of writing.

Why It Matters: If signed, the law would make the payment an entitlement rather than a discretionary gesture, binding future administrations.

SEDC agriculture plan: 200-hectare pilot farm launched in Enugu, 15 more planned across the zone
ENUGU — October 2, 2026 (flag-off in September)

The South East Development Commission (SEDC) and the Enugu State Government flagged off a 200-hectare integrated pilot farm at Nomeh Unataeze, Nkanu East LGA, in September 2026, according to The Trumpet. The commission projects more than 1,000 direct jobs when it is fully operational.

The wider plan envisages pilot farms of 200 to 300 hectares in each of the region's 15 senatorial districts. For now, implementation is concentrated on the Enugu project, while assessments continue elsewhere, including mapping of arable land and irrigation potential in Anambra.

Why It Matters: It is the first concrete rollout of the commission's agriculture programme, which draws on the Michael Okpara-era development model.
