Enugu Holds Local Government Council Elections Today

Enugu State goes to the polls today for local government council elections, with Governor Peter Mbah having spent the past week campaigning hard for the ruling APC. At a rally in Amagunze on Thursday, Mbah urged voters not to split their ballots, warning against efforts to have supporters back APC candidates for some positions while backing rivals for others.

Why It Matters: The outcome will shape control of grassroots governance across Enugu's 17 LGAs heading into the 2027 general election cycle.

Imo Scraps Council Elections In Favour Of Interim Committees

Imo's local government elections, originally fixed by ISIEC for today, have been overtaken by a State House of Assembly amendment to the Local Government Law passed Wednesday. It empowers Governor Hope Uzodimma to appoint Interim Management Committees to run the state's 27 councils for at least six months, with sitting chairmen and councilors' tenure expiring September 30.

Why It Matters: 27 chairmen and 305 councilors face an abrupt exit, and the move away from direct elections at the grassroots may draw criticism.

Delta Secretariat Shut Down After Deputy Director's Death Following Altercation

Workers under the Nigeria Labour Congress shut down the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba on Friday, a day after Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, died in hospital following an alleged altercation at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, on Thursday, September 24. Workers accused the commissioner, his driver, his police orderly and a fourth aide of involvement and demanded arrests. Police have since arrested one suspect and launched a manhunt for two others, while the state government has pledged a transparent investigation on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's instruction.

Why It Matters: The death of a senior civil servant inside a government office, and labour's decision to shut the entire secretariat, has raised sharp questions about worker safety within Delta's public service.

Developing Stories — State Desks

ANAMBRA

A newly constructed road in Umunze has drawn public criticism after a video showing alleged substandard work went viral, with residents directly calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene. Separately, torrential rainfall has continued to batter Idemili North LGA, sacking the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom, HRM Igwe Alexander Uzo Onyido, from his palace after floodwaters submerged the premises and several vehicles — the latest chapter in a long-running flooding and erosion crisis along the old Awka-Onitsha road.

ABIA

Governor Alex Otti used a Friday interview with Arise Television to reject renewed calls for the return of a fuel subsidy, arguing government support should target production rather than consumption — a position he says he has held since the 2020 oil price crash. Separately, the long-running dispute with judiciary workers (JUSUN) over leave allowance continues to resurface despite a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this month; government maintains leave bonus is already built into judiciary workers' consolidated salary and is asking the union to submit to a staff verification/audit exercise before further payments proceed.

ENUGU

Beyond today's election, Governor Mbah told the All Nigeria Editors Conference this week his administration wants Enugu to become the South-East's economic gateway, citing 1,500km of roads and 7,000 classrooms delivered. Separately, Enugu Air flagged off its first international flight, to Cameroon.

IMO

Governor Uzodimma inaugurated 6,030 newly recruited teachers and 345 non-teaching staff on Thursday. ASUU continues pressing the governor, as Visitor, to intervene in a 37-day strike at Imo State University over the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.

EBONYI

A civil society coalition (AEISCID) has called for Governor Francis Nwifuru's impeachment over corruption allegations and a broken bridge contract, following remarks from Senator Nwebonyi flagging the failed project.

DELTA / ANIOMA

Delta's monthly environmental sanitation exercise holds today, 7–10 a.m., with movement unrestricted because the BECE Resit is ongoing statewide. Residents are asked to clear drainage channels and maintain clean surroundings.

RIVERS — IKWERRE & IGBO COMMUNITIES

The Ikwerre LGA chairman, Hon. Charles Wobodo, has ordered the arrest of the engineer responsible for a building collapse in Omuhia, Imogu. Casualty details were not yet available.

Background & Analysis

Flood risk window closes, vigilance urged: NiHSA's seven-day flood advisory for Imo, Delta and 13 other states ran September 19–25 and has now closed. With Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo all named in the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook's high-risk list, residents in low-lying and riverine areas should stay alert as the rains continue.

Coverage gap, flagged transparently: no South-East security incidents or business/economy developments met the 24–48 hour recency threshold at press time. Coverage resumes as verified reports emerge.

“We remain committed to responsible fiscal management, with no borrowing for consumption.”

What To Watch Today

  • Enugu LGA council election results expected through the day and overnight.
  • Imo Interim Management Committee appointments possible as early as next week.
  • Delta sanitation exercise, 7–10 a.m., alongside the ongoing BECE Resit.
