UDI, ENUGU STATE

Armed men invaded St. Joseph Catholic Church, Inoyi, Affa Community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State on Sunday, August 2, 2026, during a church gathering and abducted several worshippers, including a seminarian and church workers.

The Enugu State Police Command, promptly despatched a joint security team made up of Police operatives, Enugu Forest Guards, and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, launching a rapid pursuit operation and reportedly closed in on the fleeing kidnappers shortly after the attack. Under pressure from the pursuing operatives, the kidnappers abandoned one of the victims, who was rescued unharmed. The remaining captives were taken away as the suspects escaped into surrounding terrain.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, subsequently ordered the deployment of additional operational assets, including the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), intelligence personnel, and surveillance resources from the state's Command-and-Control Centre to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the remaining victims.

By August 19, community leaders in Affa publicly thanked Governor Peter Mbah and security agencies for what they described as the successful rescue of the abducted residents, indicating that the broader rescue efforts had yielded positive results and brought relief to affected families.

POLICE KILL SUSPECTED GANG LEADER LINKED TO MURDER OF OCHIA MONARCH

Ohaji/Egbema, Imo State | August 10, 2026

The Nigeria Police Force says operatives of its Special Tactical Squad (STS-FID) have killed a suspected gang kingpin, Ojiogu Elumah Martin, popularly known as "Acid", during a raid on his hideout in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on August 6.

Police spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu said the operation was part of ongoing investigations into the April 10 killing of HRH Eze Barrister Paulinus Ekwueme (Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom) and five other persons along the Asa–Awara Road while they were returning from Owerri. An AK-47 rifle, three magazines and 56 rounds of ammunition were reportedly recovered during the operation.

Investigators say several suspects have already been arrested while efforts continue to track down remaining members of the gang. The case has become one of the most closely watched security investigations in Imo State this year.

The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspected kidnappers allegedly connected to the abduction of a victim at Divine Heritage Lodge, Ukwulu, in Dunukofia Local Government Area, where a ransom of ₦15 million was reportedly paid.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu arrested the prime suspect, Dauda Mohamed, 38, on July 27 following intelligence-led investigations. A second suspect was subsequently arrested based on information obtained during interrogation.

The arrests form part of the state government's intensified anti-kidnapping campaign as authorities seek to dismantle criminal networks operating between Anambra and neighbouring states.
