🤖 Struggling to Explain Technical Stuff Clearly? AI Can Be Your Practice Partner

Person talking to a robot

Hello Hello!

I’ve been working as a Product Manager for almost two years now — a big shift in my career.

At first, I was worried. I didn’t have direct experience in the role, and I wasn’t sure how things would go. But it’s actually worked out really well.
My manager is happy with my performance, I received a raise, and even got an award at work. 🙌

You know what’s helped me a lot in this role? AI — especially ChatGPT. English is my second language. I’ve been in Canada for over 20 years, but English will always come second to Portuguese for me. I’ve accepted that.

And as a Product Manager, I write a lot: Presentations, documentation, user stories, proposals, strategy docs — you name it.

Here’s my process:
1. I write freely, just to get the thoughts out.
2. Then I ask ChatGPT to polish it — to make it sound more professional and natural, like a native English speaker would write it.

The ideas? 100% mine. The structure and content? Mine. But AI helps me tighten it up, clean it, and get it over the finish line. It’s like having an editor in my pocket.

Honestly, it’s made my work 10x faster. I spend less time obsessing over wording and more time focusing on what I want to say.

Now — I’ve had friends say, “But shouldn't you be the one refining your writing? Isn’t that how you improve?”

Fair question. But here’s how I see it: I am improving — because every time I see what AI suggests, I learn. Next time, I try to get closer to that polished version on my own.

Today’s article will show you how you can do the same — and use AI as a tool to become a better, clearer communicator.

Enjoy,

— Aderson

🤖 Struggling to Explain Technical Stuff Clearly? AI Can Be Your Practice Partner

Ever tried to explain a technical concept to a non-technical person... and got that blank stare in return?

Or maybe you were in a meeting, trying to explain how something works — but halfway through, even you started wondering if you were making sense.

"How do I practice explaining complex ideas more clearly — without wasting people’s time or feeling judged?"

Enter your new low-pressure communication coach: AI.

Yep — AI tools like ChatGPT aren’t just good at writing code or generating ideas. They’re great at helping you practice explaining things better — especially when you’re a developer, engineer, or tech professional who wants to grow your communication skills.

Let’s break down how.

3 Ways AI Can Help You Explain Technical Concepts More Clearly

  • 🧱 Break Down Complexity Without Losing Accuracy

  • 🗣️ Tailor Your Language for Different Audiences

  • 🪞 Get Real-Time Feedback (Without Judgment)

🧱 Break Down Complexity Without Losing Accuracy

The hardest part of technical communication isn’t knowing the subject — it’s knowing how much detail to share, and when.

AI helps you simplify without dumbing it down.

Try this:

🧪 Prompt: “Explain how a REST API works to a non-technical product manager.”

What you'll get back is a first draft — often using metaphors, relatable analogies, and plain language. From there, you can tweak it to match your context, voice, and use case.

More examples to try:

  • “Explain Redux like I’m a designer.”

  • “Summarize what a database index is, using a real-life comparison.”

  • “How would you explain the concept of load balancing to a client in one sentence?”

You’re not just getting answers — you’re learning how to structure your own.

It’s like having a writing coach sitting next to you, helping you say what’s already in your head more clearly.

🗣️ Tailor Your Language for Different Audiences

Tech pros often struggle not because they don’t know the answer — but because they don’t adjust their language based on who’s listening.

The way you explain something to:

  • A senior engineer

  • A team lead

  • A product manager

  • A client ...should be different every time.

With AI, you can practice this adaptation on your own, safely and quickly.

Example:

Prompt: “Explain the difference between synchronous and asynchronous processes to a stakeholder who’s frustrated about system delays.”

You’ll learn how tone, pacing, and phrasing can change your impact — and you'll get better at code-switching between audiences.

The result? You sound more confident, clear, and credible — no matter who you’re talking to.

🪞 Get Real-Time Feedback (Without Judgment)

Let’s be honest: most people don’t want to practice communication with others because they’re afraid of looking bad.

AI removes that pressure. You can:

  • Practice out loud and transcribe your explanation

  • Paste it into the AI and ask, “How can I make this simpler?”

  • Compare your version with AI’s and learn what to adjust

Want to make it more engaging? Ask:

  • “Add an analogy to this explanation.”

  • “Make this sound more concise and confident.”

You’re building communication muscle, in private, at your own pace. And when you step into that real meeting or client call, you’re way more prepared.

Final Thoughts

Explaining technical ideas well isn’t just a “soft skill” — it’s a career booster. It builds trust. It increases visibility. It makes collaboration smoother.

You don’t need to guess how to improve. You have a tool right in front of you that can help you practice, reflect, and grow.

Start using AI to:

  • Break things down

  • Test explanations for different people

  • Build the habit of clearer thinking = clearer speaking

Your future self — the one giving confident updates in front of a cross-functional team — will thank you.

Personal Updates
