🚸 Coding for kids
Hello Hello!
"Q: How do methods break up?
A: They stop calling each other!" 🤣 source: Murat Purç
Today I bring to you error etiquette, coding for kids and when not to use pixels.
🛑 I never knew there was science behind proper error messages and how to make sure users of your system, site, app, don't feel stupid when using it.
This article talks about patterns of presenting messages that inform the user that something is not correct. For instance, avoiding premature error messages when filling out a postal code. Before the user has even a chance to finish the postal code, the form is already telling them that the code is incorrect.
Too much of anything is bad and error messages is no different.🚸 This one comes a bit too late. Today Sunday Dec 11, is the last day of the Annual Computer Science Education Week.
This is an initiative dedicated to inspiring K-12 (Kindergarten to Grade 12) students to learn Computer Science. It doesn't mean they will be coders, but coding is good to help developing mathematical, logical, and structural thinking, amongst many other skills.
I know you are not 12 years old, but you may have a sibling, a cousin, a neighbor, or maybe you are a parent, or an uncle/aunt. I have exposed my older daughter to coding early on and I'm glad I did it. Although her interest in coding didn't persist, but she enjoyed the experience. I want to do the same for the younger one.
If nothing else, a great tool for kids to try coding a bit in an easy, fun and free way is Scratch.Never use Pixels to set font-size
📐 While the title is a bit exaggerated, I know that using pixels will limit how scalable your fonts are and affect accessibility as well.
This article promotes the use of EM and REM units (not to be confused with R.E.M.) instead of PX (for pixels).
I'm guilty of this. I don't think much about it when I need to do some CSS, but it doesn't mean that I don't know about it.
My personal update:
🎙️ The Moth Podcast. During my readings about storytelling, I came across this organization in the US focusing on telling stories. If you like short stories (about 15 min long), you can get their podcast on Apple or Google.
🎶 I went on Friday to a Mariah Carey Christmas Concert. I went because of my kids, but I enjoyed it and my kids loved! Keep the judgment to a minimum please 😜.
⚽ Brazil was eliminated from the World Cup. I was devastated. Today I'm just sad. It was so close... Congrats to Croatia!
I dedicate this newsletter to my two good friends A.K. and S.C. - They just moved to Ottawa yesterday (Sat, Dec 10) to start a new chapter of their lives. Wish you both the best!
"God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference"
Cheers, hasta la vista and bye!
