What does it take to divest from Thanksgiving?
Hi all,
Hello from the dark-at-5-pm winter sky. (This conversation between adrienne maree brown, and Saeed Jones + Zach Stafford of Vibe Check about darkness is 🔥 for your solstice.)
Today’s newsletter will be quick because I’m midway through working on a Wandering Grace essay that braids together autistic burnout with Eaton Canyon fire recovery, and Emily and Amelia Nagoski’s book Burnout isn’t giving me the metaphors I want, but a rom com novel by Helen Hoang just might…?? 😅 Subscribe at Substack for that.

First of all, I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to those of you who backed the Kickstarter or helped spread the word about the “Dear Daughter” zine! We reached our goal, so the zines will be reprinted. 🥳 AND we reached our stretch goal, too! 🎉 So I will be able to extend some comp’d invitations to the “Dear Daughter” intergenerational speculative letterwriting workshop. There is still time to pre-order a copy of the zine and other zine bundles, as late pledges are still open on Kickstarter!

The main order of business for this newsletter is to point you to this longer missive that I wrote over on the Wandering Grace substack: How do we actually divest from Thanksgiving? Even though it’s not emotionally complex to say no to colonialism, it can still feel emotionally complex to say no to these particular colonialist traditions? As a holiday, Thanksgiving has had decades and centuries to accumulate myth, misconception, nostalgia, and propaganda — both at a meta-cultural level and at a interpersonal level for whatever the holiday means to you and your community(s).
Next year, I will try to host a Franksgiving potluck in early November, so we can have some space and time to figure out how to holidays more intentionally. This year, well…I’ll be abstaining incidentally if not intentionally.
What ideas do yall have? How are you grappling and reckoning and hacking and adapting? I would love to hear in the comments over on Substack or here if you want to hit reply.
