ANGER…A DANGEROUS WEAPON —

One reason some of us struggle to overcome anger is that we’ve relied on it too often as an offensive weapon. It can serve as an excuse to storm out of the house, bring an argument to an explosive close, or intimidate others into fear and defensiveness. In the past, this may have produced results of a kind, reinforcing the belief that anger is effective. However, the problem with anger is its destructiveness. When we give in to it, we harm ourselves and those around us. Harsh words spoken in anger leave lasting wounds that never fully heal, creating new problems that fuel even more resentment.

The AA program teaches us that there is virtually no justification for anger under any circumstances. When we feel it rising, we have the power to take control of our emotions. If we’re upset by someone else’s behavior, we can remind ourselves that while anger might be a natural reaction, it’s not a necessary part of our lives.

Today, I’ll strive to get through the day without a trace of anger. I’ll frequently remind myself that anger is destructive and that my true goal is to build a better, more peaceful life.
