Love your enemies in case your friends turn out to be a bunch of bastards. — R. A. Dickson
There are, of course, practical reasons for treating everyone with kindness and consideration. You never know, the person you help out today may be your boss someday. It costs nothing to be nice to people, especially our friends. But this goes for our enemies, too, if we still have any. In working this program, we find that we tend to outgrow enemies.
It is impossible, in fact, to work the Twelve Steps and consider anyone an enemy. Enemies are friends we haven’t gotten to know yet. They are in need of our love, just as we are in need of theirs. Our relationship with God shows us that we are all kin under the skin. God plays no favorites; why should we?
I have no enemies, only brothers and sisters.
