The Snoot Letter - Hiking
The Snoot Letter
Issue #23 – July 29, 2020
I always considered myself a city person. An indoors person. I still do, but the pandemic has shifted something inside me. Jess and I have started hiking. We drive out to the mountains around Los Angeles, and walk for hours. I never thought I would be this kind of person, but here we are and I feel like I have to hike at least once a week. I have a new appreciation for Los Angeles, and the access it gives to the abundance of nature.
This week, we rented a house in Joshua Tree, and I have spent every evening hiking in the park. I’ve lived in the US for 30 years, but this is my first time visiting a National Park. Turns out they are pretty darn incredible!
What’s next? I’ve been googling camper vans, and looking at real estate listings for mountain cabins and desert bungalows. Who am I turning into? I honestly don’t know, but I’m trying to make sure it’s a shift towards the positive as much as possible.
The pandemic quarantine has changed us all in ways we can’t come to terms with yet. I don’t want to get into a set of predictions about what those changes will be, but I think it’s something we should acknowledge. The “new normal” on the other side of this won’t be the same as the previous normal. Be prepared for change in ways you can’t predict on the global level, local level, and within yourself. We will be the grandparents doing weird things that we have to explain to the young people. Actions and beliefs that only make sense if you lived through a global pandemic.
