Your Funnel is StrAIning

AI is devouring traditional sales funnels, prompting a reevaluation of our sales strategies.

One signal 🔭
One prompt 🧠
One subtraction opportunity ➖

🔭 Signal: That Funnel of Yours? It's Straining

Your sales funnel is losing leads faster than you think, and the loss starts long before a salesperson speaks to anyone.

The linear sales funnel of the 2010s was nice while it lasted (kind of like your favorite 2011 breakup song). Now the buyer journey is a spaghetti pot of touchpoints with AI stirring the noodles.

  • Search is no longer the dependable first step.

  • Cold-call pickup rates have cratered to below 1%.

  • The ads don’t add much.

With search getting less searched and almost no one picking up the phone, many buyers are heading straight to AI. According to G2 Research's Buyer Behavior Report, 29% of buyers now start their research in ChatGPT or similar.

In other words: the first half of your funnel is getting eaten by AI. And where there’s less top, there’s less bottom to hit your bottom line.

LLMs can now run not only early-stage discovery for many B2B buyers, but far more of the sales flow than was even possible before, as in this example:

"An agency I recently hired didn’t send me a proposal or cold DM. They sent me their Avatar. I could chat with it and it provided a teardown of MY work, and solid proof of results they can bring. This is the new bar."
Do you think this will grow or shrink over time?

It's not all bad news though. As AI Strategist & Product Leader Nate B. Jones said recently "The upside is huge: 2025 offers a rare window for double digit gains in sales driven by aggressively rolling toward a 90% LLM attention world."

💧 Analogy of the Week: From Funnel to Strainer

issue011.png

We keep putting leads in at the top, expecting them to trickle neatly into sales. Instead, they’re slipping out through holes we didn’t know were there: LLM shortlists, peer Slack groups, AI-driven review sites, and more.

Your inbound isn’t gone (yet). But it’s now spider agents feeding the LLMs, not search crawlers feeding you. By the time a human sees your pitch, their shortlist is already set.

Welcome to the asynchronous, multi-parallel world that is strAIning sales everywhere!

🧠 Strategic (Human) Prompt

“Where is your funnel leaking the fastest? What does this tell you?”
or
“When’s the last time you realized you were in someone else’s funnel, and reached for AI instead?”

➖ Suggested Subtraction

The fun funnel era is ending, and that's a big conversation. Delaying AI investments in sales could result in opportunity costs of $40-60M in lost market share on a $100M basis (DemandGen).

Before you kill your funnel, run a one‑week experiment:

  1. Map the first 3 actual steps your last 10 customers took before talking to sales

  2. Compare to your current funnel diagram

  3. Lean in on that Big Conversation

🧭 Closing Note

This is issue #11 of Signals & Subtractions. I’ve got 3 more ready, then I decide whether to continue this series, or practice some subtraction of my own.

If this hit (or missed), I want to know. Your clicks, comments, shares, and replies signal what happens next.

What replaces the funnel?
Which products or markets will be the last to change?
