One practical AI win, every week. No jargon required.

By Dr. Rowan Hayes · Estimated read time: 6 minutes

This week we’re looking at two situations that quietly drain a lot of time and mental energy: researching a major purchase (car, appliance, home project) and writing a professional decline email when you don’t want to burn bridges. Both are places where AI can save you hours, reduce anxiety, and help you sound like the grown-up you actually are.

Try at least one before Sunday. That is the whole assignment.

Use Case 1 of 2

Use Case 1: Researching a major purchase decision

On a Wednesday night around 9:30 p.m., Maria was hunched over her laptop at the kitchen table. She’s 57, a school administrator, and her 12-year-old Subaru had just reached the “mysterious new sound every month” stage. Her mechanic told her, kindly but firmly, “You should start thinking about replacing it.”

So she did what most of us do: she opened 14 browser tabs. Consumer Reports, Reddit threads, dealership sites, YouTube reviews, some blog with a guy named “TruckDad” in the URL even though she’s not buying a truck. Everyone had opinions. Half the reviewers contradicted the other half. She just wanted two things: something safe and reliable, and a clear sense of what was a fair price in her area. Two hours later, she felt more confused than when she started.

Her problem wasn’t a lack of information. It was too much information, in too many formats, with no one connecting the dots for her specific situation: her budget, her city, her driving habits, and her tolerance for risk. That’s exactly the kind of mess AI is good at untangling - if you give it the right instructions.

Here is the exact prompt to use:

Copy everything between the lines and paste it into your AI assistant. Then replace the bracketed sections with your details.

Use Case 2 of 2

You are my personal buying advisor. I am considering a major purchase and I want a clear, practical overview, NOT hype.

Step 1 - Ask me questions: Before you give any recommendations, ask me up to 10 focused questions to understand my situation. Cover: - my budget range (including what “stretch” budget would be) - my location (city/region) - how I plan to use this [ITEM] - my priorities (e.g., reliability, safety, long-term cost, ease of use, resale value) - any constraints (e.g., no used items, must be available within 30 days, need financing, physical limitations)

Step 2 - After I answer your questions, then do the following: 1. Summarize my needs in 5 bullet points, in plain language. 2. Based on public information up to your knowledge cutoff, outline 3 - 5 good options for me. For each option, include: - model/name and typical price range - key pros and cons for *my* situation - known reliability or quality issues (if any) 3. Explain what trade-offs I’m making if I choose cheaper vs mid-range vs premium options. 4. Give me a list of 8 - 10 specific questions I should ask a salesperson or contractor to avoid being taken advantage of. 5. Suggest a simple “next step” plan I can follow over the next 7 days to move toward a decision without feeling overwhelmed.

Here is the item I’m considering and my starting point: - Type of item: [e.g., compact SUV, heat pump, laptop for home use] - Approximate budget: [e.g., $25,000 - $32,000, but lower is better] - Location: [City, State or region/country] - Main uses: [e.g., commuting 30 miles/day, occasional long trips, transporting elderly parent, etc.] - Anything I already know I want or don’t want: [e.g., no leather seats, must have good warranty, want high safety ratings]

Begin with Step 1 and wait for my answers before doing any research or recommendations.
