Welcome to Small Rapids
There are hints of winter in the Helsinki weather and with them comes the promise of another skating season. It's the first day of December. It is time to start a new newsletter. Welcome to Small Rapids – I'm glad you are here.
What's the point of this newsletter?
The outdoors has become a big part of my life - from hiking and kayaking to climbing and ice skating. Previously I've written about my adventures on my blog quanttype. However, I've focused quanttype on software engineering and these stories need a home of their own. A newsletter will bring them directly to your inbox, but if you know what it means, you can subscribe via RSS instead.
Here's what you can expect:
- Stories and photos of my outdoor adventures
- Thoughts on gear and training
What's next?
We are on the brink of the tour skating season in Helsinki. A few people have already been skating on the lakes of Nuuksio and the freezing weather will no doubt bring another chance soon. That's what I'm excited about right now.
I'm looking forward to is this winter's omatoimiretkikurssi at the skating club Suomen retkiluistelijat (SRL) . It's a course about how to plan and execute self-organized skating trips, as opposed to just attending the ones led by the club guides. I've got some experience already from last winter, but there's more to learn.
I've planned a post or two about skating for December. If there's ice, then I'm going to write about actual skating. If not, it's time for some gear posting.
Why English?
You might ask why I am writing about Finnish outdoors in English? The answer is simple: I've got plenty of friends who do not speak Finnish, both in Finland and abroad, with interest in the outdoors. I'm writing this for them, too.
