I rafted to Pomona around the 20th February to:
- service 10 permanent kiwi micro moths.
- service 11 24/7 moths on Pomona and Rona
- deploy a new 24/7 moth at F09, and on Rona at R18, and 743
Most Kiwi moths recorded for almost 4 full months at 8000Hz, to my next trip should be late June.
Thankfully the weather was sketchy on the way in. I did Rona first due to wind, then Pomona. Travel was ok early.
Then there was a big blow, I lost my nerve and I got stuck on Pomona. Thanks to Nick for the ride out to Manapouri.
Active Moth Locations (Pomona/Rona)
- Micro Moths: A05, C05, D03, D09, F10, G05, H04, M04, N14, N20
- Pomona 24/7 - 1/30 Moths: C03, G05, H01, J11, P09, F09
- Rona 24/7 - 1/30 Moths: 287, 343, 620, 635, 778.1, R18, 743
I was on Rona 1 night and Pomona 3 nights, mostly warm and windy. I spent a lot of time drawing.
Listening to Gecko in the night on Rona was very cool. I heard only 1 male call from my camp on Pomona.
The moth at 778.1 on Rona needs to be replaced, I suspect it is faulty and erratic after last years drowning.
There were a total of 5020 detections.

Kiwi Audio
Moraine Creek
I collected 2 moths from Moraine Creek in January. They were out for 2 months and no kiwi were recorded. A kiwi was once reported aa little lower down, but I didn't know that when I placed the moths.
Kahurangi
Thanks to Inge Bolt for continuing to send Kahurangi data. We are now doing stats automatically. There are some noisy Kiwi in the Kahurangi, in places up to 5 calls per hour.
We have also done some work on a GSK/LSK recogniser thanks to data generously shared by Andrew Digby.
Rowi
I finally managed to get my hands on some Rowi data this week, fascinating. I hope you manage to catch them all. Their calls are distinctly different to GSK and Haast Tokoeka, yet strangely echo both at times. Ocasionally I thought I was listening to Pomona data, sometimes Kahurangi data, but my secondary recogniser trained on Kahurange data was saying not kiwi, not kiwi. I need more Rowi data to train a specialised recogniser.
Call rates were similar to Pomona, with a lot more male calls than female. Unlike the noisy Kahurangi Roroa who also have a more equal call pattern. Not sure what is going on here.
Gecko
There seem to be a few Korero Gecko around on Pomona. I first noticed them in historic data from F09. I now have a gecko/kiwi recogniser. In current data I am getting a lot of detections at M04.
In historic data going back to 2022, there are detections (yet to be looked at properly) at D09, C05, F09 (many), F10 (many), G05, H04, H09, K09, KS06 (many), M01, M04 (many), N14, S13T, W20.
Hooray Gecko!
