No, I haven’t abandoned this Substack yet, I’ve just been running around like a doofus. To wit, this week may only have one update, because I’m still trying to get shit DONE.
So here’s this week’s articles, pretty self-explanatory stuff:
-First up is my tribute (not really a traditional obituary) to Corey Yuen, one of the Seven Little Fortunes as well as a beloved Hong Kong action filmmaker. You might not know his credits, but you likely know his work. Still shocked that we only found out about Yuen’s death two years after the fact, though that was apparently according to family’s wishes. Still, when’s the last time news of a public figure’s death was reported via Jackie Chan’s Weibo account? It’s a bit weird, people!
As I wrote:
[Yuen’s] movies aren’t uniformly good, but his talent often shone through them anyway. He wasn’t an unsung genius, nor was he just your favorite action star’s favorite choreographer—Corey Yuen made you sit up every time the stars aligned, and he was allowed to make things happen.

Next, there’s my review of Consumed, a new horror movie about a couple who go on a hike and wind up getting attacked by a something or other (NO SPOILERS, lol). Devon Sawa’s there, too! Also, it’s not a David Cronenberg adaptation, so stop asking!
As I wrote:
It’s[…]hard to shake the feeling that we’re watching inexperienced or simply ungrounded performers struggling to enhance threadbare material. Some exciting moments are scattered throughout ‘Consumed,’ but they’re never as compelling as the movie’s initial promise.
