Signal Chain — Episode 7
Welcome to the seventh episode of Signal Chain. This pop-up newsletter is a creative collaboration between generative musician Duncan Geere and photographer Oliver Holms.
We’re taking turns to send new work to each other. Each new piece is inspired by the piece before. We’re building a chain of influence together and you’re along for the ride. New installments are released on the 1st and 15th of every month, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in the footer.
Hi Oliver,
Thanks for your latest little slice of magic. Your previous instalments have all been moody landscapes, so the beautiful, vibrant, close-up took me by surprise. You might not have been intending it as a pattern interrupt, but it certainly served that purpose for me.
The larger reflections are the star of the show, and especially the green neon frame with the pink sign inside. As such, my mind immediately went to something very synthetic-sounding, like the slow opening of the maw of a low-pass filter on a sawtooth wave. A piece that Vangelis would have been proud of including on the Blade Runner soundtrack.
But then something happened. My eyes kept sliding past the green and pink and getting stuck on the lazy orange of the sodium vapour lamps. Rather than nightclub queues and kebab shops and taxi offices, my imagination became captured by what comes next - the drizzly darkness of a Sunday at 4am. No-one around, just the rain dripping off a parked moped, awaiting the wan light of a grey dawn.
That's the place I found myself in as this track came together - tiny fragments of sound reflecting in the water droplets, the gurgle of the drains, and near the end, the slow, sad, sunrise.

Only three episodes left in this first season - I can't wait to see what you come up with next.
