Sideyard Notes: Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 Peaberry 🫛
Hello Sideyard Friends,
This week's roast is a peaberry Papua New Guinea. As I've noted before, Peaberry coffee comes from a genetic anomaly in the coffee shrub that causes a coffee cherry to produce just one seed, rather than two. The single seed has more space to grow, which produces a round pea-like shape--hence the name. Something like 5-10% of all coffee cherries have this anomaly and it's up to the processing stations to sort them out into a straight peaberry lot like this one. It's worth taking a look at the beans if you haven't had a peaberry before. As far as coffee beans go, they're pretty cute.Â
In the cup, I'm tasting chocolate, brown sugar, and blackberry. It's creamy and tart at the same time. Next week will be a catch-up-on-leftover-greens blend.
The origin track recommendation of the week is Mama Daddy by The Double Vision Band. I'd love to hear more of this album, but having a hard time finding anything more than this YouTube track alas...Â
Last week's coffee was not my favorite. After a few days rest, I expected it to go one way, and it went the other. If you also felt like it wasn't up to par, reply here and we'll put you on a list for a free bag--to be delivered over the next few weeks.Â
Cheers,
Ryan
