Sideyard Notes: Congo 🇨🇩 Coopade Cooperative 🦍
Hello Sideyard Friends,
Sorry for the late notes... I just got back to town after a week away with extended family. Coincidentally, we drank a lot of Sideyard Coffee. Our airbnb had a dual pot Krups brewer that had a slow side and a fast side. I didn't do a double blind test, but I'm pretty sure the faster side made a better cup than the slower side. It's possible that the faster side was doing a better job of heating the water... anyhow even the faster side was slow compared to my Technivorm Moccamaster brewer. 🤓
This week's coffee is from a region that runs along the border of the Virunga National Park in Congo. It was processed by a network of 24 micro mills called the Coopade Cooperative. The coop has been an incredibly stabilizing force for farmers in a region that has seen a lot of adversity in recent decades. In the cup, I'm tasting dried plum, caramel, and brown spices (cinnamon/clove/nutmeg adjacent spices).
Next up: Kenya.
Cheers,
Ryan
