Sideyard Coffee: Tanzania 🇹🇿 Peaberry 🟢
Hello Sideyard Friends,
If any seed could be described as cute, it's the peaberry! Peaberries occur as a result of a genetic anomaly that causes a small percentage (5%-10%)Â of coffee cherries on any given coffee shrub to grow a single seed rather than two. During processing, the peaberries are painstakingly sorted out from their two-seeded kin to create unique lots of coffee made up entirely of the cutest, roundest, tastiest beans around. The peaberry anomaly occurs in all coffee varietals and growing regions, but if for no other reason than marketing (that I'm aware of) peaberries have become nearly synonymous with Tanzania. The idea that they pack in twice the flavor seems fully apocryphal, but there's no denying their uniqueness.Â
I'm tasting a balanced cup that starts with brown sugar, a tannic acidity (like black tea), and develops more chocolate tones, and a hint of tropical fruit as it cools.Â
The origin track of the week is Mwene by Msafiri Zawose. Zawasoe, a composer and bandleader from Dar Es Salam, is known for fusing traditional folk Gogo with contemporary instrumentation and rhythms.Â
Next week we're roasting an unabashedly fruity natural Ethiopian. :) The week after next we'll have a table at a Rare Bird mini market and What's Blooming on Harrison.Â

p.s. It was another rainy delivery day (grrrrr), which may have contributed to a mis-delivery. If you got the wrong size bag this afternoon, reply here and we'll get it sorted! Thanks!
