Sideyard Coffee: October 8 - Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬 🍇
Hello Sideyard Friends,
Papua New Guinea is not known for producing natural process coffees, but that's what we've got this week! It's a medium roast that makes for a bright and fruity cup. It's definitely on the wilder side compared to some recent selections. The first thought that popped into my head when I smelled the grounds was grape bubble gum. Like Bubble Yum or Big League Chew (without the purple dye). The bubble gum part doesn't come through in the brewed cup (thankfully, I think?) but it's definitely got grape and plum alongside a brighter than average tea-like acidity and medium body. There are some darker notes as well, due to a bit of roast variation in the beans. It's a complex and enigmatic cup that will keep your taste buds on their toes.
The origin track recommendation is a laid back psych folk rock number: Saman Doye by the Black Brothers. Even though the Black Brothers are known as one of the most beloved PNG band of the 1980s, this is one of the few tracks available online. Our loss.
Cheers,
Ryan
