Sideyard Coffee: October 15 - Sumatra 🇮🇩 Mandheling + Saturday (10/16) Open House!
Hi Sideyard Friends,
If you're free, please remember to stop by our roastery open house tomorrow morning (Saturday 10/16) between 9am and 12pm at 832 S Lyman Ave! We'll be doing roasting demos, and serving up free coffee and donuts. And if you're already feeling fully caffeinated, we'll have our first decaf roast on hand to try as well. You can head straight into the backyard and kids are of course welcome.Â
This week's coffee is a dark and earthy Sumatra Mandheling. The name Mandheling comes from an alternate spelling of the the local Mandailing ethnic group and, according to locals, it started getting used as a trade name for northern Sumatran Arabica coffee during WWII. A Japanese solider is said to have asked a shop owner where his coffee was from and the shop owner responded with an answer about where he himself was from–the Mandailing people. Due to some combination of terroir (sorry) and processing methods, Mandheling coffee is known for heavy body, low palette acidity, and deep earth tones. This lot checks all those boxes; it's a down-to-earth, woodsy, dark chocolate cup that provides a great counter balance to last week's brighter, fruitier Papua New Guinea.
The origin track recommendation of the week is Jalan Bebas Hambatan by Bin Idris. It's the kind of laid back folk pop that feels just right for a cool and cloudy October day.Â
Cheers,
Ryan
