Sideyard Coffee: May 13 - Ethiopia ๐ช๐น Dry Process Shantawene ๐๐
Hello Sideyard Friends,
When I first started roasting coffee, I stumbled into a dry process Ethiopia thatย blew my mind. I can't say it was better than anything I've had since, but becauseย it was the first time I'd tasted anything like it in a coffee it stands out in my memory. Ten years later, despite being fully spoiled by bothย the variety and quality of coffee we get to enjoy, I'm still partial to Ethiopia dry process coffees.ย There's not a lot lately that puts me in theย "what a time to be alive" mindset, but sitting outside this morning drinking this week's coffee did it for me.
The coffee was processed at a privately run mill near the village of Shantawene in the Sidawa region. It's fairly well-sorted for a dry process coffee, but you'll definitely notice more roast variety and a few more quakers than in a typical washed coffee. It's undeniably a dry process coffee in the flavor profile as well! I'm tasting strawberry, stone fruit, and melon. The freshly ground aromatics are more in line with the brewed cup than the wet aromatics (which lean more rustic), but it's a fun one all the way through.ย
The origin track recommendation is Buna by Ethiopia singer songwriter Iri Di. "Buna" is the Amharic word for coffee and gives away exactly what this song is all about. It opens with the sounds of coffee being roasted in a pan over an open flame and ends with a sound we're all familiar with.ย
Lastly, come see us next week at two neighborhood events! We'll have a few different origins for sale in 8oz bags.
