Sideyard Coffee - March 19, Brazil 🇧🇷 🥜
Hello Sideyard Friends,
This week's coffee is a Yellow Catuai cultivar from Chapada de Minas Brazil. Catuai was hybridized in the 1970s for its ease of harvest and increased yield and the name, coming from the indigenous language of Guarani, means simply "very good". The cultivar, however, like all inputs in coffee production is just one piece of the puzzle. This particular lot was processed as a "pulp natural", whereby the pulp of the coffee cherry was left on the seed as it dried, as opposed to being removed prior to drying (as is the case with wet processed coffees). This pulp natural method tends to impart extra sweetness and/or creaminess as the flavors from the coffee cherry are absorbed by the seeds during the drying phase. It's a darker roast but I do get a creamy peanut butter thing coming through, along with some savory undertones and a roasty chocolate note.
This track from contemporary Brazilian folk singer/composer/producer Lucas Santtana is a nice match for a Catuai, conceptually at least, as it takes aim at ecological and human injustices wrought by the far right government of Jair Bolsonaro.Â
Cheers,
Ryan
