Sideyard Coffee - March 12, Burundi 🇧🇮 Commune Mutambu
Hi Sideyard Friends,
Let's start with this amazing track by Burundi native Canjo Hamisi. I have no idea what the lyrics are and there's very little information to be found online about it, but the feel of the song seems to transcend the struggle and strife of late 1970s Burundi. Between genocide, wars, and political unrest, the intervening decades have unfortunately not been much easier on Burundians. When harvest yields are good and importers pay fairly, coffee provides a desperately needed infusion in their rural subsistence farming communities.
Coming fresh out of the roaster this coffee had extra loud clove and cinnamon notes. In the cup it's the chocolate bitters that you'll first pick up on, followed by the spice. As a pour over it's hard to disagree with and it ought to make for a decent espresso as well. We'll have another Burundi in a couple weeks, but that one's dry processed and with a little luck it'll have strong berry accents. Between here and there is our first lot from a country that exports more coffee than any other–Brazil!Â
Cheers,
Ryan
