Sideyard Coffee: February 5 - Java Java 🇮🇩
Dear Sideyard Friends,
Please rescue your coffee from your porch or mailbox when you have a minute! It's cold out there.
Java from Java... When the Dutch colonized Indonesia in the late 17th century they imported coffee seeds, making the region the first outside of the Arabian Peninsula and Ethiopia to widely cultivate coffee. The first exports were in the early 1700's and by the late 19th century much of the world's coffee was being exported specifically from the island of Java. The nickname 'java' was therefore once synonymous with coffee from the island of Java–an etymology not unlike cheddar cheese, limousines, or duffel bags.Â
This specific lot comes from the western Pangalengan district of Java and the importer's tasting notes include 'orange, tobacco, and copper.' I don't think I know what copper tastes like tbh, but I can see how there might be something in this cup that has a metallic tinge to it. I find it in the astringency and somehow it's not unwelcome! Tasting the sweetness of the orange and the earthiness of the tobacco are less of a stretch. This one is tasting better today than yesterday, and I expect that trend will continue for another couple days.Â
Cheers,
Ryan
p.s. Can we all agree that 'morning thunder' is a better nickname than java?
