Sideyard Coffee: February 26 - Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Dumerso ๐ช๐น ๐
Dear Sideyard Friends,
It's Ethiopia week! The Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia is widely regarded as the birthplace of coffee, in part due to a story involving a goatherd named Kaldi, his dancing goats, and a sleepy monk. Some 1200 years laterย the region remains famous for its coffee thanks not to apocryphal origin stories but to the quality of the coffee. Ethiopia produces some of the best coffees in the world year in and year out.
The first thought that popped into my head when I tried this coffee was 'smooth.' That's not a particularly enlightening thought, or really all that helpful in terms of understanding what it tastes like, however, so I'll try to elucidate. I think smooth means that we're tasting balanced flavors and an acidity that is present but not overwhelming. This coffee is that. It has decent sweetness, moderate body and acidity, and a balanced mix of lemon and cocoa. Take a good whiff of either the dry grounds or the brewed cup and I think you'll pick up on a tropical fruit vibe as well. With last week's Kenyan I found myself reaching for some different beans after the first cup because of how intensely bright and lively it was. This one I could drink all day long.
