Sideyard Coffee: April 1 - West Java 🇮🇩🍒🥤
Hello Sideyard Friends,
Calling coffee "java" has it's roots waaay back in the 1700s when coffee from Java was the first coffee to circulate widely outside of Yemen and Ethiopia. Indonesia is also known for producing some of the funkiest and earthiest coffee around. The word dank comes to mind. "Dank memes" type dank (as in exceptionally unique and odd), but also dank as in damp woodsy forest dank. This week's semi-washed process West Java roast has some of both of these to be sure, but it also has some brighter notes mixed in. The very first thing that hit me was cherry cola. Next comes a flavor that the importer's tasting notes describe as pipe tobacco. As weird and specific as that sounds, I see it and I like it! It finishes on a bittersweet citrus pith note. It's not my ride or die coffee, but the beans are wildly aromatic and I love how complex of a cup it brews.
The origin track recommendation for the week is Lagu Wajib from the West Java singer-songwriter Bagus Dwi Danto, aka Sisir Tanah.
Cheers,
Ryan
Extras: we have two 8oz extras of this week's West Java.
