Show Up Toronto Turns 1! - May 7, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
This week, Show Up Toronto turns 1 year old! Before I say anything else about it: please take the reader survey so I can get a sense of who you are, how you engage with this project, and how we can best grow.
I launched the website on May 5th, 2025, and the first issue of the newsletter on May 6th listed 16 events across two weeks. It was so short I formatted the events by hand. This week’s newsletter includes 68 events for the next seven days alone, and the “Down the Road” section includes another 52 for the following fortnight.

This project has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I’m incredibly proud of the effort I’ve put into it. This email you’re reading is the 52nd email I’ve written in the past year, each representing 7-10 hours of work. It turns out there are so many Tuesdays Thursdays in a year. (Maybe too many?) But I can’t ask you to show up if I am not consistently showing up myself, and I hope I’ve proven that I can and will do just that.
I also can’t in good conscience advocate for collective action while running a solo project. Show Up cannot and should not rest on one person’s capacity or perspective, even a particularly stubborn one. I’ve met many wonderful people this past year, and a number of them have offered to donate their time and effort to help this project grow. For the last couple of weeks Etienne, Brendan, Gelaine, Jérôme, and a few others have been helping out with compiling event data. It has already made a world of difference, and I can’t wait to see how much bigger we can get with more capacity. I’m so grateful to my burgeoning little team for jumping in with both feet.
I’m also incredibly grateful to all of you for reading, submitting events, telling your friends, and above all for showing up for your community. Your emails of support and encouragement truly mean the world to me, and your stories about efforts you’ve gotten involved in because you heard about them in this newsletter remind me what the point of all of this is when I’m staring down another 3am bedtime.
Finally, to Toronto organizers across the city, whether you’re reading this or whether you have no idea we exist: thank you for vindicating what I knew in my bones to be true, that there is so much good work happening in Toronto. The job for the rest of us, now that we know where to look, is to help build the capacity to dream even bigger, fight even harder. When we fight, we win.
I hope this first year is just the first of many. We have big plans. Please take the reader survey so we can incorporate your ideas into our big plans. You’re on this journey with us, after all.
As always, thank you for showing up.
Jenny
PS: If you’re curious about how much it costs to run Show Up, I’ve added a section on cost transparency on the about page. We don’t need financial support right now; I’m just personally always curious about these things and I figure others might be, too. Also, if you ever see me at an in-person event, ask me for a sticker!
