Show Up Toronto - September 30, 2025
Hi friends and neighbours,
It is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on the atrocities of the residential schools system, the victims who never made it home, and how much farther we still have to go for progress. We rightfully talk about the impacts of intergenerational trauma in these situations, but that obscures the fact that the last federally funded residential school closed in 1997, well within our lifetimes.
There are a ton of events today memorializing this, many hosted by Indigenous groups in the city. I've marked these with an orange heart and I would urge you to attend one near you if you can. If you can't make it out, another way to reflect is to read some of the reports from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which wrapped up its investigation in 2015 with 94 recommendations. Ten years on, not only have most of the TRC recommendations not been implemented, but our governments at all levels seem intent on further trampling on the rights of Indigenous nations: building new pipelines and prisons on Indigenous land, criminalizing elders who protest, callously disregarding missing and murdered indigenous women, and ignoring the racist violence perpetuated by our legal system. In far too many cases, elected officials and so-called public intellectuals deny that these harms are even real.
Fighting this requires all of us. However you choose to commemorate today, it's important to remember that we need to show up the rest of the year as well.
Jenny
Take action: Minister Joël Lightbound announced massive cuts to postal services without consulting with workers or the real owners of Canada Post, which is all of us. The postal service is not a consumer commodity, it is an essential public infrastructure that connects even the most remote among us, and the egalitarian nature of it is exactly what capitalists dislike. Conservatives and neoliberals are obsessed with demanding that public services that actually benefit all of us turn a profit while never worrying about how much of a loss the police or military runs. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) immediately walked off the job in a nationwide strike to defend our public services. Find a picket line near you and show some support, and contact your MP to tell them you support CUPW and oppose the cuts.
