Show Up Toronto - October 7, 2025
Hi friends and neighbours,
Not much of a preamble today, as I'm feeling under the weather. For folks who have joined recently, thank you and welcome! A quick reminder that there are lots of ways you can stay up to date with events in between newsletters:
Add the iCal feed to your calendar app and all new events will appear automatically
The RSS feed currently shows you new events as they are added but I will be changing this to show upcoming events
The Bluesky and Fediverse accounts both post event reminders on the day of, as well as a few hours before each event
As always, the best way to support this project is to tell your friends and neighbours about it. Thank you for showing up.
Jenny
Take action: Today marks two years of genocide and I truly don't know what to say about it that hasn't already been said. Western nations' ongoing support of Israel in the face of incontrovertible war crimes and against the wishes of their people is only the most recent and most visible manifestation of the kind of violent imperialism they have always practiced, and there is a direct throughline from the way Canadian governments treats Indigenous nations to the genocide in Gaza.
There was a huge mobilization over the weekend that tens of thousands of people attended and there are also actions throughout the city today, including a rally at Jurassic Park at 6pm. If you can't make it out, there's other ways of supporting the cause. Greta Thunberg is a stone cold badass with more spine than all our global leaders combined, and she is also a high profile and very popular activist whose martyrdom might cause some genuine trouble for Israel. She has been released, but many other activists have not and some have been disappeared entirely. Global Affairs Canada has confirmed that three Canadian women on the Sumud Flotilla were illegally detained by Israel and are yet to be released. Six more Canadian women are part of the next wave of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition expected to reach Palestine in less than three days. If our government can't protect its people, what goddamn good is it for? Call and write your local MP, Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Defence Minister David McGuinty, and Prime Minister Mark Carney and ask them to demand Israel release all Sumud Flotilla participants immediately as required by international law, demand safe passage for all humanitarian aid, and impose sanctions to stop Israel’s genocide
