Show Up Toronto, October 28 2025

Hi friends and neighbours,

It will not come as a surprise to you that this newsletter's official political stance is that Doug Ford is a nightmare human being on a personal mission to ruin everything good about Ontario in general and Toronto specifically, but this past week has just been an absolute avalanche of garbage even for him. I mainly want to talk about Bill 60, but don't miss the bid to end fixed election dates and increase the cap on political spending, the closure of the last supervised consumption site in Toronto's west end, and of course the speed camera ban and the skills development slush fund scandal and the ongoing disenfranchisement of local schools, not to mention the rogue ads that scuttled Canada's trade talks. I love it here.

Bill 60 claims to cut red tape to incentivize more development and therefore housing stock, but it might as well have been called the "I think tenants aren't real people" bill. The most controversial provision is a proposal to get rid of something called security of tenure. Right now, if you're a renter, after your initial lease (typically one year) is up it normally converts to a month-to-month lease with no set end date. The Attorney General Doug Downey would have us believe that this tiny bit of housing security is preventing hundreds of thousands of rental units from being put on the market because landlords don't want tenants who can live somewhere indefinitely and would rather...not earn rent at all? I guess? And so they would like to make it legal for landlords to control when a lease ends, which of course mainly means being allowed to evict tenants once a year to jack up the rent.

Ford's government killed rent control in 2018, and since then the homelessness population in Toronto has more than doubled. Giving landlords permission to evict people anytime after a year and eliminating housing security from the 1.7 million renter households in Ontario (about 30% of the province) would be a human rights catastrophe. Incidentally, 40% of Ford's cabinet are invested in real estate.

Bill 60 was announced last Thursday, caused instant uproar across housing groups, ACORN recorded complaints from over twenty thousand people, and by Sunday night the Ford government slightly walked back that particular provision. I want to be very careful about this though: they did not say that they would not do it, or had seen the errors of their ways. They simply said "not now". They're also still moving forward with all the other garbage in Bill 60, which includes:

  • Significantly limiting tenants' abilities to fight for their own rights at the Landlord Tenant Board, which is already notoriously landlord-friendly (applications to evict are heard between 4-6x more quickly than applicants to report bad landlords)
  • Making it easier and faster for landlords to apply for eviction
  • Removing the requirement for landlords to provide compensation to evict tenants for own-use, an already flimsy pretext
  • Increasing funding for sheriffs to carry out evictions but not for monitoring delinquent landlords, natch
  • Creating a searchable blocklist of anyone who has ever been evicted

And so on.

Various tenant organizing groups have called it an all-out war on tenants, and I don't think that's an exaggeration. Whether fixed term leases were walked back because the government was hoping to use its sheer brutality to make the other provisions look less bad in comparison or because it was a genuine overstep and the public outcry made them panic, I think it's clear that this government has nothing but contempt for anyone in this province who is not a wealthy conservative homeowner. They are counting on the anger ebbing away now that they've slightly recanted on the worst of the worst, but we can't let up the pressure.

The thing is, I'm genuinely also kind of hopeful about this. The York-South Weston Tenant Union organized an emergency call on Sunday night at 8pm with two days' notice, and over 1,000 people signed up and almost 600 people from across the province were on the call. ACORN, Climate Justice Toronto, Democratic Socialists of Canada, Off the Defensive, group after group in the city are rallying together to fight this. I hope this threat is bad enough to jar people into remembering that Doug Ford isn't just a clown who cosplays nationalism for Elbows Up brownie points, he's a deeply dangerous demagogue who will come for every bit of hard-won civil right and social safety net we've got. But we've won them before and we can win again. We just gotta show up.

Jenny

Take heart: The Saskatchewan Medical Association voted this past weekend to transfer all funds out of banks complicit in genocide and move towards local credit unions with policies against investing in weapons manufacturing. Your move, OMA.

Take action: There are so many ways to get involved in the fight against Ford and it's fantastic! The York-South Weston Tenant Union is running a province-wide campaign to target buildings owned by the landlord lobby and in conservative areas, and can use your help with canvassing, organizing, or mobilizing. Tell your non-Torontonian friends to sign up too! The Democratic Socialists of Canada have added three virtual tenant organizing trainings in the next month (on the 8th, 16th, and 21st) - sign up and learn how to hold a lobby meeting in your building and rally your neighbours! ACORN has scripts for contacting your MPP and the housing minister, and they're hosting their own emergency organizing call tonight at 6:30pm. A big rally is being planned for Nov 22nd, which is National Housing Day, and I'll provide more updates on that as I get them. Get organized!

Side note: Show Up Toronto uses a platform called Buttondown to send out emails, and last week the good folks at Buttondown featured the newsletter and let me talk about the project at length. This is a good one to forward to friends who want to know what the whole thing is about!
