Show Up Toronto - October 21, 2025
Hi friends and neighbours,
Happy Diwali, and happy Blue Jays winning the American League Championship Series for the first time in 32 years! I am not a sports fan but I am a big Toronto fan and I very much enjoyed the city rushing into the scramble lights at Yonge and Dundas to celebrate sensibly for the duration of the light cycle before clearing the intersection to let cars pass. How much more Toronto can you get?
I attended Toronto Troublemakers School this past weekend and sat in on some really great sessions on organizing tactics and strategies. I've also been running a book club with Tech Workers Coalition Canada to read No Shortcuts by Jane McAlevey, which is all about building rank-and-file union power. It's incredibly inspiring to read about how the Chicago Teacher's Union turned around 25 years of stagnation and labour concessions in just two years of concerted organizing in the early 2010s, and then attend talks featuring a rank-and-file caucus inside ACTRA (the Canadian performing arts union) working to elect union officers who will actually fight back against years of lockout, or hear about how the college support staff coming off of five weeks of striking built solidarity with superpickets. Labour history is always being written, and no bureaucracy is so far entrenched that the workers can't take it back if we organize.
The Workers Action Centre just released an incredible report about wage theft in Ontario, highlighting how workers were shortchanged nearly $200 million in unpaid wages in the past 10 years and how the Employment Standards Act enforcement regime is failing workers. With the provincial legislature back at work this week ramming through an omnibus bill filled to the brim with further deregulation, there's no better time to organize than now. WAC is hosting a webinar next Tuesday to officially launch this report and discuss ways to fight back. See you there.
Thank you for showing up.
Jenny
Take action: I can't believe we're doing this again (I mean I can but I'm mad about it) but the racist dillweeds who want to turn Canada into a Christofascist ethnostate who got chased out of Christie Pits Park in September are back at it once more, this time with a rally in Queen's Park this Saturday on October 25th. You know the drill, we gotta show up for the counter-rally more loudly and in bigger numbers and reaffirm that hate has no place here. Bring your friends and family and neighbours!
