Show Up Toronto - October 15, 2026

Hi friends and neighbours,

Like I'm sure many of you, I've been following the news of the bike lane removals beginning on Bloor street with dismay. From the phalanxes of municipal cops doing the dirty work of the province and the allegations of local businesses tossing tacks in the bike lanes to puncture tires, to the contractors covering up their logos knowing they're doing something shameful and the Ministry of Transportation violating their own construction permits to remove the lanes during the work day, it's all just so stupid and craven and wasteful. The city has estimated that the bike lane removal will cost $48 million, and surely the province had nothing better to do with that money. There's no underpaid health care staff or educators buying school supplies with their own money or anything.

At the same time I'm also marveling at how many people showed up yesterday at a moment's notice, the masses of protestors on Tuesday and the chants of "get home safe" that night as construction trucks left the area, the sheer size of the Critical Mass bike ride last week. We've come a long way since the Jarvis bike lanes were ripped out in 2012 by Rob Ford (because apparently this family has exactly one idea between them) and four lonesome protestors staged a sit-in, and it's down to the dedicated hard work of cycling organizers and advocates.

Protests resume today at 6am. Join them if you can. If you can't, maybe you'd like to give Verdi Alliance Civil (the company cited on construction permits) or ATS Traffic (their subcontractor) a call and politely tell them exactly what you think of their willingness to profit from making our roads more unsafe. Regardless of what the outcome of this particular fight is, the next steps are the same as they was in 2012: show up, build community, build power.

Jenny
