Show Up Toronto - November 25, 2025

Hi friends and neighbours,

Yesterday protestors packed the public gallery at Queen's Park and created an organized disruption of the Bill 60 vote (including yours truly). The bill still passed, as we were all expecting it to, but the disruption and the premier's callous response to it made international news.

Politics in Ontario can be very disheartening. With the Conservatives holding a supermajority of seats, they have more or less free rein to enact whatever legislative agenda they want, and have shown zero interest in consulting with anyone who isn't a donor or lobbyist. It hella sucks! I hate it here (late-stage capitalism with a captured ruling class, not Ontario, most of the time).

The thing about political change is that while it is so much slower than we like, and it requires so many more of us than we have been told it will, it is always happening. Our political and social situation is never finite so long as there are people willing to put in the work to create change. There have been bad laws before that we have repealed, and there will be bad laws again that we will repeal, and this week we simply added a few more to the list.

Bill 60 took a month from introduction to passing. That's atrocious. But in that month, organizers knocked on over 10,000 doors to talk to tenants. How many people learned about tenant unions, or the unfairness of the Landlord Tenant Board? How many people attended an organizer training? How many people simply talked to their neighbours for the first time?

It is easy to lament our defeats, and I often do. It is harder to remember, though no less true, that the world would be a much worse place today if not for the efforts of organizers across the ages who all faced more defeats than victories. We always have to be more organized than we are, but it doesn't mean that what we've already built isn't itself already a bulwark. Every meal distributed, every eviction prevented, every overdose reversed matters. So does every door knocked, every mind changed. It may not feel like it does; it's a sort of act of faith to believe that snowflakes eventually add up to an avalanche. But in Canada, we know about sintering, how snowflakes bond to each other as soon as they touch, forming packs that are harder to dislodge the more of us there are.

York-South Weston and Climate Justice Toronto are not letting up on the tenant organizing, and they're holding a joint orientation this Saturday. Progress Toronto is also still knocking on doors across the city all this week and next. There's also a rally against wage theft on Saturday. Find your mountain, and let's get to work.

Thank you for showing up.

Jenny
