Show Up Toronto: November 11, 2025
Hi friends and neighbours,
Winter has arrived with a vengeance, and with it always comes the reminder that not everyone gets to stay warm indoors. The city of Toronto has just five warming centres, which don't even activate until it's been -5C, which is absurd.
I had a frustrating conversation about homelessness recently with someone I met in a social setting, who was quite callous and dismissive in their suggestions about how to solve the problem. I suspect to them the crux of the issue is that they have to see the unhoused, not that people were unhoused. This person seemed surprised by my continued pushback, and when I finally said in exasperation that all of their ideas assume that no new people would be rendered homeless once you "get rid of" the current unhoused population, they asked in apparently genuine curiosity why that would be the case.
This conversation has been on my mind a lot because I forget how truly divergent our information economy is. I know there are a lot of people who disagree with me about the origin of and solution for homelessness. I didn't realize it was possible to simply not know that many people live in such financial and social precarity that one stroke of bad luck could land them on the street, and that things are worse now than they were in 2018 not due to happenstance but by policy design.
As many as 300,000 Ontarians are projected to be homeless in the next decade, and that is before the province introduced Bill 60, an all-out assault on tenants' rights and housing stability. Last week, the province introduced a motion to bypass public hearings on Bill 60 so they don't have to hear from housing advocates about the severe damage this will do to the third of Ontario households that rent, including almost half of Toronto households. (Bill 60 also kneecaps bike and transit lanes; it is an absolute travesty.) The provincial government has been the largest cause of homelessness in Ontario, and they have the temerity to speak of affordability while the landlord lobby stands beside them, not even bothering to hide the puppet strings.
The City is considering a policy response to Bill 60 this week - please call and email your city councilor to voice your opposition to the bill. Please also call and email your MPP, especially if you or someone who loves you lives in a conservative riding, and demand they stand up for tenants. Call and email your MP and demand that the feds actually pony up the money they committed to for supporting Toronto's overburdened shelter systems. Join the York South Weston Tenant Union in canvassing the city or ACORN in canvassing the province. Sign up for a tenant organizing workshop with the Democratic Socialists of Canada, and mark your calendars for the Housing Day Rally on November 22nd. And if you have extra winter gear, please consider dropping it off with the Alexandra Community Encampment Support winter clothing drive.
Finally—I know this seems like small potatoes, but I don't think it is—talk to your loved ones and neighbours about these things. The social norm of not discussing politics is a great way of fracturing and atomizing a class of people that has much more in common with one another than with the ruling class. We outnumber them by a lot, and we can exercise power collectively if we get organized.
Thank you for showing up.
