Show Up Toronto - February 24, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
The Senate social affairs committee has recommended removing the immigration-related sections from the border bill that migrant rights groups have been pushing against for months. It doesn't mean the Carney government, which has been pretty adamant about ignoring grassroots voices, will actually follow the recommendations, but it does mean that the pushback is being heard. The national security committee has the final say, and they have begun their review this week. Please email or call them by February 26th, and join the rally on Thursday.
The Ford government announced updates to the university funding model last week that increases tuition fees and totally upends OSAP and makes higher education even more inaccessible to Ontarians. OSAP previous provided students up to 85% of their tuition in the form of grants, and the new model caps that at 25%, meaning a minimum of 75% of OSAP funding any student can receive is now interest-bearing loans. This is being touted by this government as some great magnanimity, but the overall funding increase for the higher ed system comes after years of underfunding, leaving Ontario still far behind other provinces in supporting our higher education sector.
At this point, the contempt of conservative administrations for the concept of learning is well-worn. An educated populace is better equipped to tell when its government is lying and exploiting them, and that's inconvenient when your goal is lying to and exploiting your constituents. The playbook of underfunding education so you can point to its struggles as evidence of failure and use that to justify diverting public money towards private alternatives is the same playbook used on health care and transit and the postal service and basically every public service except the police. Weird how that works out.
We're starting to see students organizing against this, and we're also starting to see efforts towards sectoral organizing in higher education. If you work on a campus or know someone who does, get connected with the next open organizing meeting on March 5th. If you're a student or know one, get involved with the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario, who are rallying and calling for a student strike. They're not going to stop until we make them stop, so let's make them stop.
Thanks for showing up.
Jenny
PS: The next event in the Wayfinding event series I've been co-hosting with my pals at 1RG is tomorrow night, and features a panel of teenagers talking about their experience with technology. So often conversations about kids and technology is about them, not with them, and I'm excited to hear directly from our young friends from across the city. Hope to see you there tomorrow!
