Show Up Toronto - April 23, 2026
Hi friends and neighbours,
Happy belated Earth Day! There are a ton of environmental events this weekend, from community clean-ups to bike rides to a turtle parade in High Park. Why not enjoy the nice weather and meet some neighbours while you're at it?
You may have heard the story over the weekend that our esteemed premier decided to buy a private jet for $29m for travel, and then that he sold it again a few days later following backlash.
This story sounded funny to me not because Ford wouldn't buy a private plane—he absolutely would—but because Ford doesn't really give a crap about public outrage. Not when dismantling speed cameras that even his cop buddies wanted to stay up, not when taking over school boards all over Ontario, not when selling off Wasaga beach or ripping up bike lanes or closing down Ontario place or putting in a luxury spa. All of these had much longer, sustained critical campaigns in the media, from the opposition, and at the grassroots level, and it hardly moved the needle at all.
There's a tendency in our age of polycrisis to dismiss certain things as "distractions", which can become a toxic way of looking at the world. Issues that affect a smaller number of people still cause real harm and still deserve our earnest attention. Buying a private jet and then claiming you changed your mind because of public outrage, though: seems pretty distracting! Not just because it's taking up news cycles instead of him changing Ontario's Freedom of Information laws so that he can hide his own wrongdoing, but also because I've heard people express frustration that this is the thing that got people to mobilize.
The assumption seems to be that the reason Ford listened to critics this time because his voters were the ones who got mad. I don't think that's an unreasonable assumption, but I also don't think there's any way for us to know if it's true. More importantly, it is demobilizing to imagine a large swathe of Ontarians who are blithely indifferent to corruption and cruelty and widespread harm to our most vulnerable, who were only moved to get up in arms about an (admittedly very stupid) plane.
We've already seen this administration pull the tactic of saying something extreme, walking it back, and then doing the very bad thing they were going to do all along with Bill 60. It would not at all shock me if the private plane stunt was a deliberate attempt to dominate the news cycle so that people pay less attention to the fact that Ford wants to take over the TTC, change the law to make it much harder for the public to know what elected officials are doing, and let the province arbitrarily name appointees to run municipal councils with same "strong mayor" powers as democratically elected representatives. Maybe enough people texted Ford that it got through, or maybe this was the plan all along. Ultimately it doesn't matter. Our job is still to organize and to build something sustainable, with durable power beyond a fleeting news cycle.
Thanks for showing up.
Jenny
