Sewing Circle: Feb 17 Protest, Feb 28 Blackout
Hi all,
I’ve had to pull back from the Sewing Circle for the last few months to try and preserve my mental health in the face of (waves arms) all that, plus some local crises. But I’ve learned about a few upcoming actions that give me some hope.
No Kings on Presidents’ Day Rally
Monday February 17, Boston Common, 11am, across from the State House
The Boston protest has more information here: https://events.pol-rev.com/events/687b1117-cbbb-4a4e-9941-f865cfc1ca52
It’s organized partly through 50501, the group that did the recent Feb. 5th protests. There’s been a little national coverage, and I’m hoping to hear more.
24 Hour Economic Blackout
Another group, The People’s Union, is organizing a day of economic blackout. (Scroll down a bit on their page for more information.)
Thursday February 27th, 12am - Friday February 28th, 12am
The general outlines are: do not make any purchases during those 24 hours - not in-store, not online; no Amazon, no Walmart, Best Buy, or Target; no money spent on fast food, gas, major retailers; do not use credit or debit cards for nonessential spending. Instead, only buy absolutely necessary essentials, and if you must spend, use local businesses.
I’m also seeing some posts about a March for Science on March 7th, but I don’t yet have local links for that. I’ll share them if I get them.
As for me, I’m going to continue the small actions I believe in (voter protection, election work, donating blood) and add more as my ability allows. As Terry Pratchett wrote, it’s sometimes better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness. Strike some sparks, and remember: You are Not Alone.
