Sewing Circle: 80 Days and Counting

As you may have guessed, this newsletter is going all in on election work from here to November. There’s much to be done on so many fronts, and getting people who’ll listen into office is a vital step. Take your breaks as you need them, and take no vote for granted. Here’s a few ways to help.

Support a campaign directly

Sometimes support means donations, sometimes fundraising, sometimes it’s phone or textbanking, sometimes it’s just getting materials to the people who need them.

You can sign up with the Harris/Walz ticket, or sign up with Sister District to flip state races. You can support Every State Blue to contest races across the country and ensure Democrats in red and purple states have a voice.

But no matter what campaign you’re helping with, they’re all going to need a strong ground game. Therefore…

Support GOTV efforts

This starts with postcarding and phonebanking, but goes beyond “remember to vote!” messages. Red2Blue is phonebanking in Pennsylvania to make sure new voters have registered correctly and guide them through any obstacles to voting. VoPro Pros contacts voters whose ballots have been rejected to help them “cure” their ballots, recruits poll observers, and generally fights vote suppression. Vote Riders focuses on voter ID assistance in states where ID is required. Activist Afternoons in Cambridge regularly works both to support specific candidates and causes and to do general GOTV efforts.

Plus I have hundreds of postcards from Postcards to Swing States on hand! If you want a list of names and a dozen or two cards to fill out and mail in October, just drop me a line.

If you have time and capacity to be a poll worker, volunteer! In MA, it’s a paid position, and while it’s exhausting it’s also incredibly rewarding. This year, poll workers need more support than ever.

Nikki Hiltz competed as the first openly transgender nonbinary person in the Olympics.

In a bid to prevent bird flu from becoming more serious, the US Government is paying for flu shots for livestock workers.

Amnesty International reports a lot of successes from the last six months.

Marine Protected Areas are having a benefit beyond their waters - in particular, more “trophy-size” fish are found nearby!

Eighty days left before the election. Take your actions, keep your heart light, and remember: You are Not Alone.
