The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls

I recently finished playing “Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru“, translated as “The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls” and published my review and list of references. The game was published in 1992 by Nintendo and developed by Intelligent Systems, the same developers behind some of my favorite games like “Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door”.

“The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls“ cartridge for the Game Boy.

This game was never published outside of Japan, despite multiple re-releases to the Nintendo 3DS e-Shop and Nintendo Classics. I detailed how I was able to experience the game in English thanks to a fan-created English translation patch and dumping the ROM with the GB Operator.

“Frog Game”, as I’ve come to nickname the game, is a unique spin on the puzzle RPG genre: it’s quick, light, funny, and full of references and shared DNA with other Nintendo games. I recommend this game as a follow-up to playing Link’s Awakening or as a small snack between larger games in your backlog.
