SELCE set to celebrate solar success

We are active on social media so please give a like or follow.

The mayor of Greenwich is joining the SELCE team (above) to celebrate the success of our first community share offer. And we hope that some of our shareholders and supporters will be able to come along too.

The event, which takes place on Tuesday 22nd March at 11am, will give you the opportunity to see how SELCE’s solar panels are being used and to meet some of the children who are benefiting from them.

Mayor Norman Adams will be unveiling a new solar display unit that will show pupils at Woolwich-based Mulgrave Primary School how much energy is being generated by their new panels.

Mulgrave has an impressive track record for social and environmental initiatives and it is an ideal venue to formally thank everyone who made it possible to provide free solar arrays to our four ‘partner’ schools in SE London.

If you can’t make it to the event next week but would like to see SELCE’s solar panels in action, we will be holding a second celebration in mid-June. The mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, will be formally unveiling the solar display unit at one of our partner schools in the borough.  We’ll let you know the exact date nearer the time.

Many thanks to Mulgrave’s acting head teacher, Martha Holder, for giving us permission to launch the March event at the school.

SELCE’s solar celebration takes place on Tuesday 22nd March from 11am at Mulgrave Primary School, Rectory Place, SE18 5DL. Tea and home-made cake will be provided.

Full steam ahead for SELCE’s fuel poverty project

At the start of February, SELCE began the second phase its Energy Café initiative – and we’ve already had some very good results.

Energy-saving drop-in sessions are currently being held at the following venues:

The Green Man, 355 Bromley Road, SE6 2RP each Monday until 21st March and each Tuesday until 29th March;

The Old Town Hall, Catford Road, SE6 4RU on Tuesdays until 29th March and

The Crafty Cafe, 106 McLeod Road, Abbey Wood, SE2 0BS on Wednesdays until 23rd March.

Bookings for these sessions can also be made on the SELCE website here.

The café sessions provide free advice on energy saving and improving home insulation in an informal setting. To set the right mood, we offer each client a cup of coffee or tea and a slice of cake. And, before they leave, we give them a super-efficient LED light bulb worth £7.

Although we're finding that many people are struggling to keep their homes warm this winter, we’ve had some significant successes in switching clients over to cheaper energy tariffs and ensuring that they receive the discounts they are entitled to.

We’ve also been reminding people that simple energy-saving actions around the home can make a big difference when it comes to keeping costs down.

One of the most notable sessions was with the lovely lady pictured below. We managed to help her save over £800 on her annual fuel bills by switching her to a new energy provider and ensuring that she receives her Warm Home Discount.

We also enrolled her on a ‘silver surfer’ course that will help her to access online energy price comparison sites. (During the session, it also transpired that the adviser and client share the same first name, the same birthday and the same liking for the colour purple.)

We’ll be providing more details of our other fuel poverty reduction work in the next newsletter.

Many thanks to The Ebico Trust, Phoenix Community Housing, Lewisham Homes, The Crafty Café, GCDA and our six newly-trained volunteers for supporting our work.

And finally.... .....a big thank you to everyone who voted for SELCE by putting tokens in the 'Community Matters' box at the Deptford branch of Waitrose.  We've just been told that we'll be receiving a cheque for £309 shortly.

** Stop press Our portable solar-powered generator is now under construction. We hope to be ready to provide free, fume-less energy for outdoor community events this summer. If you know of any events that would benefit from our solar generator, please contact Alex Hartley at alex@selce.org.uk  **
