Mid year update 2026

It’s been a bit of a quiet year, mostly because I continue to play and run Cataphracts games. I’ve written up a few blog posts about that, including:

How I run operations in Cataphracts

How I set up my small Cataphracts game

And a summary of the game I ran in January through February.

Cataphracts is, for those who don’t know, a very large play by post wargame with strong RPG elements, and a big focus on logistics and limited communication over long distances. It’s been a lot of fun and has taken over most of my RPG time.

Not all of it, though!

I’ve put out the PDF version of The Sierra Express, a short adventure for Knights of the Road about a heist on a train. I still need to convince myself that it’s fully ready so I can print physical copies:

The title "The Sierra Express" and an image of a train

(Public domain image from a roughly period appropriate train ad)

I’m pretty proud of the maps I drew for this one, though they’re relatively straightforward:

A series of floor plans of a train, including passenger areas, sleeping cars, lounges, and cargo areas.

I also wrote a not very serious blog post about taking the spirit of 4E and making it into Cairn classes. I have no idea if this is even playable, it was just an affectionate parody that got out of hand.

Not totally sure what’s next in the pipeline other than finishing The Sierra Express and more cataphracts. I think I’m going to try and get back into running games more before I start writing more, so for now it’ll mostly be blog posts.

Oh also, I went to Between Two Cairns. It was pretty cool to be able to finally put some faces to some names online.
