See Moir Music: The Late April Normal
This is where we're at, still
Where I’ll Be
My main request for all of you, and what I’m trying to do too, is if I have the funds I’ve been donating to the charities that the various streams are raising money for. Many of the artists are raising money for themselves, others are raising money for others. All causes are valid at this point in my mind.
It’s lower effort to stream, but not by much. It’s still a performance to an audience and the DJs deserve to be compensated (and so do the people who perform and produce the tracks the DJs play!). It’s saddening to compare the number of people watching the stream with the amount of money raised sometimes.
I’m able to buy music, and it’s an investment that I make as part of my budget for entertainment. The money I usually spend on concert tickets I’ve instead been spending on GoFundMes and buying music. I know not everyone is in the same boat at this time, so the hype train works as a good alternative :)
Just Announced
If you see a set (recorded or livestream announcement) you think I might enjoy, send it my way! Or just don’t and I’ll spend the next month catching up on my backlog of YouTube videos lol. I’ve found that the Twitch streams are the best ones to watch live because the chat is pretty fun, mostly for the channels with 200 or fewer listeners.
Music Most of the Time
The list hasn’t really changed so I’m cutting it down to the ones that I’m actually listening to.
Diplo and friends and labelmates on Mad Decent Live on Twitch with music most evenings. Really tho, it’s all about Lazer Sunday.
Boiler Room has been doing streams from isolation.
The Anjuna Twitch channel is hosting occasional streams at awkward-for-the-US times but the replays still exist. Notable upcoming events:
Wed Apr 22 @ 1PM — Moon Boots Studio Q&A
Thu Apr 23 @ 8AM — James Grant Anjunadeep Edition
Fri Apr 24 @ 8AM — Eli & Fur DJ set and Q&A
Special Events
Wed Apr 22 @ 9AM — Four Tet playing a set for NTS Live.
Wed Apr 22 @ 11:30AM — Disclosure with a third kitchen mix on YouTube.
Wed Apr 22 @ 6PM — Geographer streaming for Anchor Brewing on Instagram.
Fri Apr 24 @ 6AM — Defected Virtual Stream featuring Dennis Ferrer, Dom Dolla, Gorgon City, and others.
Fri Apr 24 @ early – Sun Apr 26, probably — Club Quarantäne, I definitely thought this was an “all the time” event in the past, definitely is not, my b.
Fri Apr 24 – Sun Apr 26 — Room Service is taking place across multiple YouTube channels such as Trap Nation and Chill Nation featuring artists like Autograf, BAYNK, Big Gigantic, Big Wild, Boombox Cartel, Cassian, Channel Tres, Chromeo, Crooked Colours, Dombresky, Elderbrook, Gallant, GRiZ, Hayden James, Kasbo, Matoma, Mt. Joy, mxmtoon, Netsky (DnB set), Oliver Heldens, RAC, Shallou, SNBRN, WHATSONOT, Zeds Dead, and more. I tried to RSVP and donate, but it required a captcha that didn’t fully display and for me to create an account, so maybe I’ll try that again later this week.
Artist Streams
Other artists are consistently streaming live on their own channels on YouTube/Twitch/Instagram:
Disclosure at 1PM on some Fridays
Calvin Harris as Love Regenerator (he didn’t stream this weekend though, but hopefully he’ll be back next weekend).
Still waiting to see if Jamie xx will grace us with a set.
Livestream highlights
All the streams I managed to watch this week are an amalgamation of “it’s not online anymore” or “dig through this 12 hour video” so uh, good luck I guess.
N2N had an excellent set, followed by MPHD who put on a straight 🔥set for the 1015 Folsom Quarantine for a Cause festival, and so did Banksia. I was super impressed by our local talent. Then Justin Jay went virtually b2b with Benny Bridges and Justin played Sandstorm on a dare and Benny mashed up a hip hop track with Mambo No. 5 and I’ve never felt more alive. Qrion also played and she had a very solid set with fun tracks but it didn’t have the same adventurousness of b2b she followed up, so it was a much chiller vibe. Basically, I recommend you watch the second half of day 2 of the Quarantine for a Cause replay. (12 hrs, Twitch)
San Farafina did a Boiler Room set along with many other DJs that are also part of the Moonshine collective along with Akantu, who I discovered from the TransmissionMTL streams. (1 hr, YouTube)
Justin Martin DJed for several hours on Monday night on his Twitch channel, but the video was not archived.
Karizma’s set for the Defected Virtual Festival. Recorded at a festival from earlier in the year, the crowd looks somewhat bored which is lame. (1 hr, YouTube)
The second hour of Tiesto’s Beatport ReConnect set was a great afterhours deep house set. Currently blocked due to a copyright claim, but hopefully it will get fixed. Now it’s private though, so I guess not. Might be possible to track it down on Facebook? (2 hrs, YouTube).
The Martinez Brothers went live for nearly 3 hours on Friday, but YouTube shut it down on copyright grounds eventually and it looks like there’s no recording online. Maybe one will crop up later. (3 hrs, YouTube)
Robyn played for an hour on her Instagram and YouTube channel, but there’s no recording. She did post a tracklist on Instagram tho.
Bob Moses with Bobcast 2 (Bobcast 1 is no longer online). Honestly I thought they were a little boring. (1 hr, YouTube)
Looking forward to checking out
This is my list of artist livestream sets I want to check out that I couldn’t watch live. It’s a long backlog…
Floating Points played a Boiler Room set with KDV Dance Ensemble and friends (2 hrs, YouTube)
Dom Dolla played a set, I can only find the Facebook Live video (1 hr, Facebook)
Christian Löffler played a studio session nearly a month ago, I’ve been enjoying his album Lys. I feel obligated to mention that I hadn’t heard of a quarter of these artists a month ago and less than half of them a year ago. All aboard the hype train, folks, I’m your conductor now. (1 hr, YouTube)
Black Motion played for the Defected Virtual Festival. I don’t know who he is but I’m intrigued. (1 hr, YouTube)
Black Coffee played another set again but it looks like he took all his videos down of it so I’ll have to be more on my game next week. There are bootlegs out there though. (1 hr, YouTube)
I might catch up on the Transmission 004 stream video as well too. (6 hrs, Twitch)
I missed a lot of Beatport ReConnect sets because they were all conflicting with livestreams I wanted to watch of local artists! I’m putting them all here.
Eli & Fur played a set for Beatport ReConnect. I missed them on New Years Day this year because I was tired and went home to sleep. This time I skipped them to listen to The Martinez Brothers. (1 hr, YouTube)
Sofi Tukker’s set for Beatport ReConnect was a set I skipped to watch TV while eating dinner. (1 hr, YouTube)
Kaskade’s set for Beatport ReConnect. I enjoyed his set for…. That other livestream festival more than I was expecting, so I plan to watch this one. (1 hr, YouTube)
Flight Facilities’ set for Beatport ReConnect. I’ve listened to some of their remixes but never sought out a set of theirs, so we’ll see how it is. (1 hr, YouTube)
Hayden James played for Beatport ReConnect too. There’s so many. (1 hr, YouTube)
Joris Voorn played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
KiNK played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
Mark Knight of Toolroom records played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
Boys Noize played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
Maceo Plex played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
Modeselektor played for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
I’m still behind on so many from the past few weeks, but that’s fine! I’m not going to keep listing them here. Some videos on this list might sporadically disappear too, Twitch videos only last a week if that and artists are taking theirs down quickly as well. 🙃
Other notes
Recent great releases
Jamie xx released his single Idontknow, FINALLY. One of those tracks that you hear once and immediately want to track down. He’s under a lot of pressure to follow up his 2015 solo album, but mostly I’m just glad to have him back.
Major Lazer released the audio of their remix of The Weeknd’s track Blinding Lights, which I mentioned last week. Diplo dropped it during Lazer Sunday last week.
Camelphat & ARTBAT feat. Rhodes - For a Feeling (Extended Mix) is at least on Beatport now, nowhere else yet so if you don’t buy your music keep waiting!
I’m behind on listening to new music though because of all the uh other new music I’ve been listening to!
Shazamming while Dancing
Still continuing to keep my quarandjed playlist updated with my favorites from all the live and recorded streams I’ve been watching.
It’s now a total amalgamation of Shazams from: Qrion, TOKiMONSTA, GRiZ, Black Coffee, Diplo, Calvin Harris/Love Regenerator, Kaskade, Manila Killa b2b Hotel Garuda, Louis the Child, Four Tet, Jacques Greene, Juju Le Moko, Sebastian Leger, A-Trak, Samito, Akantu, M.Touré, The Fitness, Luttrell, Rampa, Disclosure, Tinlicker, Moon Boots, HAAi, Pete Tong, Nora En Pure, Sonny Fodera, MK, Duke Dumont, Ape Drums, N2N, MPHD, Banksia, Justin Jay & Benny Bridges, Teh Raptor, and more all the time.
Unreleased or not-on-Spotify tracks of note:
Tracks seemingly everyone has been playing (in addition to those I mentioned last week, which just seem to stay on my mind like my name is Tondo…):
Beatport exclusive Camelphat & ARTBAT feat. Rhodes - For a Feeling (Extended Mix)
ABBA - Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight) Twice is two more times than I expected to hear this track.
Weiss - Feel My Needs (original and Purple Disco Machine remix)
Diplo and Born Dirty - Samba Sujo (original and this Blond:ish remix)
