See Moir Music: September Edition

Somehow 2021 continues toward the end

Still settling into going to shows again. I went to Amtrac on 9/3, which was a great choice. Decent crowd, fascinating to see him play a live show instead of a DJ set, and got to take the bus to and from.

Better experience than SNBRN but still disheartened by how few people bother to wear masks. I guess we're all a bit SF sheltered...

Where I’ll Be

  • Fri 9/17 — Luttrell at 1015 Folsom

    • Rescheduled from last year, this will hopefully be a great show. Won't be the same as seeing him outside on Treasure Island, however. I am still debating if I'll actually go to this show or not tbh.

  • Sat 9/18 — Nora En Pure, Spencer Brown, Cassian, Marsh and others at Day to Night Festival Treasure Island

    • Rescheduled from last year, should be a great festival experience hanging out on the great lawn on treasure island. I'll probably wear a mask for the COVID but also the dust…

Conflicts and considerations

  • Fri 9/10 — Rinzen at Audio

    • There are some excellent Rinzen tracks out there, but not enough to clear my higher post-pandemic impulse buy bar.

  • Sat 9/11 — Lane 8 at Billy G

    • Saw him in 2019, no pressing desire to see him again, although Le Youth and DJ Dials playing opening sets means this will be nonstop enjoyment.

  • Sat 9/11 — Classixx (dj set) at Public Works

    • They have a couple good remixes but not enough to compel me to go to this show, even if it's close by!

  • Sat 9/11 — Andrew W.K. at Bimbo's 365

    • Always a fun time, but one that I've had once before and that was enough.

  • Sun 9/12 — Hayden James Boat Party

  • Sun 9/12 — A-Trak at the Phoenix Hotel

    • Honestly very tempting, but his sets during quarantine were either really awesome or really meh, so I'm sitting this one out.

  • Fri 9/17 — Blanq Slate + Soundproof + Love Cartel at Public Works

    • Local DJ collectives collaborate for a show at Public Works! I have other plans and early morning plans the next day, but this is bound to be a great time.

  • Fri 9/17 — Louis the Child, K.Flay, slenderbodies at the Greek Theatre

    • Excellent lineup but I don't see the need.

  • Fri 9/17 — Spencer Brown at Audio

    • Day to Night Festival pre-party featuring Spencer Brown. I'm at another show but this one should be a good time.

  • Sat 9/18 — Second Sky After Party with Madeon at The Midway

    • Could be fun.

  • Thu 9/23 — St. Vincent and Spoon at the Greek Theatre

    • This would be a throwback and

  • Sat 9/25 — Fisher, Blond:ish, Vintage Culture, Felix Da Housecat at Lake Merritt Plaza

    • Hella good lineup for this block party. Tempted.

  • Sat 9/25 — Goldroom Boat Party

    • Disappointed by the lineup this time, I haven't heard of any of the artists. But the past few years this has been a super fun time.

Just Announced

  • Fri 12/3 — Tinlicker at Audio

  • Fri 11/5 — SIDEPIECE at 1015 Folsom

    • This is highly tempting.

  • Fri 10/8 — Honey Dijon at Public Works

    • Last time she was in town she played 1015, this will be a nice intimate change.

  • Fri 10/8 — BAYNK at 1015 Folsom

  • Sat 10/16 — Tokimonsta (Menagerie After Party) at Public Works

    • Highly tempting as well, but likely to be/go very late?

  • Sat 10/23 — Elderbrook with Gilligan Moss at Regency Ballroom

    • Both of these artists put on excellent shows. Regency is a decent venue.

Other notes

Gray Area is doing another interactive workshop, this time for ambient music making with Ableton Live.

Recent releases

  • TSHA's full EP for OnlyL came out, 3 tracks of goodness.

  • Caribou dropped an encouraging new single, You Can Do It.

  • Fred Again.. dropped a single off his in-progress next album, called Billie (Loving Arms) and it's a banger.

  • Lorde's new album is bad, sorry.

  • Disclosure dropped a random album, Never Enough, with some pretty good tracks. Probably some leftovers from their last album?

  • Monkey Safari also put out an album that is pretty good.

Read Moir Music

I listened to a podcast about how Pandora does machine learning in production, which was pretty excellent. Not a ton about music, but lots to consider about music recommendations and how we define similarity. Hoping to carve out some time tomorrow for some blog post writing. Have had some great conversations lately about the meaning of genre and what it represents. It might mean something different depending on which genre you look at, since some are more narrowly defined than others. Still chewing on that.
