See Moir Music: September 2022

Summer is here and I'd like it to be less hot please

I haven't gone to any shows in awhile but that's about to break starting with Portola Music Festival—only two short weeks away :o

Where I’ll Be

  • Sat 9/24 & Sun 9/25 – Portola Music Festival with a ton of artists. I've bolded my absolutely can't miss sets:

    • Saturday you'll see me at: jamesjamesjames, Godford, Ross from Friends, TSHA, maybe the tail end of Fred Again.., Caribou if I'm ambitious, Jamie xx, and Bicep if I'm not too tired to go home.

    • Sunday you'll see me at: The Range, Prospa, HAAi, the tail end of Sofia Kourtesis, Yaeji, Keinemusik, then someone, probably, while I eat dinner I guess, then Four Tet + Floating Points.

Coming soon

September

  • TODAY Fri 9/9 – Conducta with a Club Called Rhonda at the Great Northern

  • Sat 9/10 – Bar Part Time One Year Anniversary

    • I haven't made it yet but I hear consistently good things about BPT.

  • Sat 9/10 – Yung Bae at the Midway

  • Sun 9/11 – Nox Vahn at Hotel Via Rooftop

  • Wed 9/14 – Lauv at the Greek Theatre

  • Wed 9/14 – Diplo and David Harness at Great Northern

  • Sat 9/17 – Novo Amor at The Fillmore

    • Remains one of the best crowd vibes I've had at a live show, the Fillmore I expect will be even better. Recommended.

Next week

  • Wed 9/21 – The Avalanches at The Warfield

    • Recommended, but also sold out.

  • Thu 9/22 – MODERAT at the Fox Theater

  • Fri 9/23 – Fred Again.. at the Warfield

  • Fri 9/23 – PORTOLA PRE: Gorgon City, Prospa, and Godford at the Midway

  • Fri 9/23  – PORTOLA PRE: Daphni and Chaos in the CBD at 1015 Folsom

    • I still might get a ticket to this, because Daphni! Ahh!

  • Sat 9/24 – PORTOLA AFTERS: SG Lewis at Great Northern

  • Sat 9/24 – PORTOLA AFTERS: Bob Moses at Audio

  • Sat 9/24 – PORTOLA AFTERS: Hot Since 82 at Monarch

  • Sun 9/25 – PORTOLA AFTERS: James Blake, Channel Tres, HAAi, and more at the Midway

Post Portola

  • Mon 9/26 – Chet Faker at the Warfield

    • He was good at the Fillmore as Nick Murphy, I guess it makes sense that he went back to being Chet Faker for all of his music.

  • Wed 9/28 – Lykke Li at The Warfield

  • Fri 9/30 – Gray Area Festival: YACHT A/V performance at Gray Area

  • Fri 9/30 – Broken Social Scene at Fox Theater

  • Fri 9/30 & Sat 10/1 – Odesza with Sylvan Esso and Elderbrook at Shoreline

October

  • Sat 10/1 – Gray Area Festival: clipping. at Gray Area

  • Sat 10/1 – Bomba Estereo at the Greek Theatre

    • I'll be here, and I'm very excited for some non-balcony dancing.

  • Sat 10/1 – Camelphat at the Midway

  • Sat 10/1 – Sascha Robotti at Halcyon

  • Sat 10/1 – Goldroom High Seas Boat Tour at Hornblower Cruises

October adventures

  • Thu 10/6 – FKJ at Billy G

  • Fri 10/7 – Kölsch at Audio

    • Highly tempting—the last time I saw Kölsch I actually stayed to the very end of the set. Very rarely happens.

  • Fri 10/7 – Phoenix, Cut Copy, and Porches at the Greek Theatre

  • Sat 10/8 – Fisher Block Party

  • Sat 10/8 – Sonny Fodera at The Midway

  • Sat 10/8 – Mat Zo and Jiamei at Halcyon

  • Sat 10/8 – GARAGE ACCESS feat Doc Martin, DJ M3, and DJ Cira at Monarch

  • Tue 10/11 – Daði Freyr at Regency Ballroom

  • Tue 10/11 – Sigrid at the Fox Theater

  • Fri 10/14 – Overmono at Monarch

    • I'll be there. Super psyched and kinda surprised they're playing such a cozy venue.

  • Fri 10/14 – Sat 10/15 – Breakaway festival featuring Gryffin, Louis the Child, Big Wild, Tycho, Aluna, Snakehips, Whethan, Pluko and more at Oakland Arena parking lot

  • Sat 10/15 – Noise Pop 20th St Block Party

    • Now on Valencia. Disappointed that it's moving to a much bougier area of the Mission, but it makes sense given that they moved out of their HQ at 20th. I have low expectations tbh, but with La Cucina doing the food it will be tasty!

  • Sat 10/15 – Sun 10/16 – Day to Night Festival with Dom Dolla, Booka Shade, Jody Wisternoff, Felix Da Housecat, ARTBAT, Tinlicker, Qrion, Enamour, and more at Treasure Island

    • Booka Shade makes this tempting. It's pretty straightforward to take the bus here from Salesforce Transit Center too.

Mid October

  • Mon 10/17 – Wolf Alice at the Fillmore

  • Mon 10/17, Tue 10/18, Wed 10/19 – Beach Fossils at The Chapel

  • Tue 10/18 – The Mars Volta at The Warfield

  • Thu 10/20 – Bonobo (Live) and Tourist at the Greek Theatre

    • Psyched to see Tourist again, and I've heard excellent things about Bonobo live!

  • Fri 10/21 – The Glitch Mob at a secret warehouse

  • Sun 10/23 – Lil Nas X at Billy G

    • I would LOVE to see him live but tickets are ~*demand priced*~ so instead of costing $65 + fees they're listed at $170, or more or less at any given time. If it drops below $100 before the show I might go and chill in the balcony, but until then this remains just recommended.

This is probably when people start doing Halloween things

  • Tue 10/25 – Regina Spektor at The Warfield

    • She’s excellent, I recommend. I’d get a balcony seat for the luxury of sitting.

  • Wed 10/26 & Thu 10/27 – Alvvays at the Fillmore

  • Fri 10/28 – Will Clarke at Halcyon

  • Sat 10/29 – Stephan Bodzin, Åme, and Laolu at Public Works

    • Laolu is great.

  • Sat 10/29 – Porter Robinson, RL Grime, Fred Again.., Hudson Mohawke, salute, and more at Second Sky Festival at Oakland Arena Grounds

    • Unbelievably psyched to see salute, and hey, it's BARTable!

Happening later

  • Fri 11/4 – The Knocks at Regency Ballroom

  • Sat 11/5 – Santigold at The Masonic

  • Sun 11/6 – TEED (Live) at the Indy

    • Tempting, but November is too far away to plan.

  • Mon 11/14 – Two Door Cinema Club at the Fox Theater

    • I think this is the third time they've played at the Fox since I moved out here. Day Wave is support. If I hadn't already seen both of them before I might go to this.

  • Wed 11/16 – Tegan and Sara at The Fillmore

  • Wed 11/30 – Modest Mouse at the Fox Theater

  • Fri 12/23 – SNBRN at 1015 Folsom

  • Sun 10/2 – A workshop about livestreaming: Is this thing on?

Other notes

I'm writing up thoughts about what a prompt-based AI music generator would look like, why it might exist, and the challenges such a thing could run into. Have any thoughts, ideas, or encounters with this? Let me know!

Recent great releases

  • New Tourist is out with Elderbrook, it's pretty good.

  • TSHA is dripping out singles from her album

  • I.JORDAN has a new single out, Hey Baby

  • Bonobo has a new single, ATK, which is great.

  • Booka Shade also has a new single, Confide (Contour 1) which I enjoyed.
