See Moir Music: Mid-April Melancholy
And so we enter month two without live music events
Where I’ll Be
Donating my money to the staff at the following places that I mentioned in an earlier newsletter.
Noise Pop now has a Patreon, as do many artists (such as RAC).
The Midway started a membership program that seems to assume everyone has a lot of friends they want to take partying with them a lot.
Many artist livestreams are also raising money. If you’re able to, donate the cost of a ticket to the charity or cause that each DJ’s livestream is raising money for!
Just Announced
Spoilers, I made a Twitch account to keep better track of those streams. Reiterating: if you see a set (recorded or livestream announcement) you think I might enjoy, send it my way!
Music Most of the Time
Club Quarantäne by Resident Advisor
Diplo and friends and labelmates on Mad Decent Live on Twitch with music most evenings. I’ve been consistently tuning into Lazer Sunday.
Insomniac Events has a Twitch stream as well.
Boiler Room has been doing streams from isolation.
The Anjuna Twitch channel is hosting occasional streams at awkward-for-the-US times but the replays still exist. Notable upcoming events:
Fri Apr 17 @ 8 AM PDT — Tinlicker playing a Classic House set
Sun Apr 19 @ 6 AM PDT — Brunch with Yotto
Special Events
Fri Apr 17 – Sat Apr 18 — Beatport ReConnect II is happening with DJs like Bob Moses, Boys Noize, Claptone, Claude VonStroke, DJ Boring, Flight Facilities, Gabriel & Dresden, Hayden James, Joris Voorn, Kaskade, KiNK, Maceo Plex, Mark Knight, MATADOR, Rodriguez Jr., Sofi Tukker, Tiësto, and more. Watch it on Twitch (or YouTube too, perhaps).
Fri Apr 17 – Sun Apr 19 — Quarantine for a Cause featuring local SF Bay Area DJs like DJ Dials, Femmelectric, Justin Jay, MPHD, Paul Van Dyk, Qrion, Shlohmo, Sofi Tukker, Teh Raptor, and more. Watch it on Facebook or 1015 Folsom’s Twitch channel.
Artist Streams
Other artists are consistently streaming live on their own channels on YouTube/Twitch/Instagram:
Disclosure at 1PM on some Fridays
Still waiting to see if Jamie xx will grace us with a set.
Livestream highlights
If you’re torn about where to start, start with the Twitch videos because those only stay up for a week after they’re saved by default. Picture me reluctantly accepting the fact that I’ll never listen to the first two weeks of Qrion’s home DJ sessions.
Disclosure did a set for Boiler Room (1 hr, YouTube). And by Disclosure, I mean just Guy because I guess his other half, Howard, doesn’t want to DJ solo? Maybe next time we’ll get just “Howard in the UK” instead of “Guy in LA”.
Juju Le Moko did an excellent set for Transmission MTL 002 (Montreal) (1 hr, Twitch). I discovered it because M.Bootyspoon and Jacques Greene closed out the end of their stream (1 hr, Twitch). The whole 6+ hour stream is in two parts.
Rampa DJed for United We Stream at Stattbad Keinemusik (1 hr, YouTube).
Qrion played a set for 1001Tracklists (1 hr, YouTube).
Luttrell played a feel good happy hour set on his Twitch channel, I caught the first half. (3 hrs, Twitch)
TOKiMONSTA played a mix for Intermission Broadcast (1 hr, YouTube).
Tinlicker played (with an opener, Helsloot) on their Twitch channel. (3 hrs, Twitch)
Samito on the Transmissions MTL 003 stream, along with Akantu, M.Touré, and The Fitness were my favorites (I missed all the other ones). Part One and Part Two (9 hrs total, Twitch). You might not recognize the names but they played great sets!
Black Coffee Home Brewed 002 (2 hrs, YouTube). Tasty.
Purple Disco Machine’s live set from today (1 hr, Facebook Live)
Bob Moses with Bobcast 2 (Bobcast 1 is no longer online). (1 hr, YouTube)
Looking forward to checking out
This is my list of artist livestream sets I want to check out that I couldn’t watch live. I’m still behind on many of these! What sets have you enjoyed so far?
&ME played before Rampa at the United We Stream at Stattbad Keinemusik event. (1 hr, YouTube)
Amelie Lens live session at home (2 hrs, YouTube).
Moon Boots live from Bootopia (2 hrs, Twitch).
KiNK live from Terminal V (1 hr, Twitch) and live for Digtial DGTL (1hr, Facebook Live).
Adriatique live for Digital DGTL (1hr, Facebook Live).
Alan Fitzpatrick live from Terminal V (1 hr, Twitch).
Qrion went live again from her home (2 hrs, Twitch).
Maceo Plex live from Terminal V (1 hr, Twitch).
Tom Trago live for Digital DGTL (1 hr, Facebook Live).
Old ones that I mentioned but I stilllllll haven’t watched gosh there is just so much music!
Purple Disco Machine’s live set on April 5 (1 hr, YouTube).
Wax Motif’s set for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube).
Carl Cox’s set for Beatport ReConnect (1 hr, YouTube)
Karizma’s set for the Defected Virtual Festival (1 hr, YouTube)
Qrion’s quarantine home DJ session from last week (2 hrs, Twitch)
Disclosure’s latest Kitchen Mix (1.5 hrs, YouTube)
Octo Octa threw down in a forest with Eris Drew (4 hrs, YouTube)
The Black Madonna streaming from isolation for Boiler Room (1 hr, YouTube)
Mall Grab streaming from isolation for Boiler Room (1 hr, YouTube)
Alex Cruz’s live stream on Youtube (2 hrs, YouTube)
Dixon streaming from isolation for Boiler Room (1 hr, YouTube)
Palms Trax streaming from isolation for Boiler Room (1 hr, YouTube)
Some videos might sporadically disappear, Twitch videos only last a week if that and other artists are taking theirs down quickly as well. 🙃
Other notes
Recent great releases
Waxahatchee’s new album Saint Cloud. The opening notes to Fire are evocative of Sjowgren’s track Seventeen.
We Were Promised Jetpacks has a new single, when getting lost
Frank Ocean officially released two singles that he first played back at his first PrEP club night awhile back, Cayendo and Dear April.
I still haven’t even listened to the new Born Ruffians album. There is just too much!
Shazamming while Dancing
Still continuing to keep my quarandjed playlist updated with my favorites from all the live and recorded streams I’ve been watching. Should I split it up by week? Maybe, but for now it’s just a total amalgamation of Shazams from: Qrion, TOKiMONSTA, GRiZ, Black Coffee, Major Lazer/Diplo, Calvin Harris/Love Regenerator, Kaskade, Manila Killa b2b Hotel Garuda, Louis the Child, Four Tet, Jacques Greene, Juju Le Moko, Sebastian Leger, A-Trak, Samito, Akantu, M.Touré, The Fitness, Luttrell, Rampa, Disclosure, Tinlicker, Moon Boots, HAAi, Pete Tong, Nora En Pure, Sonny Fodera, MK, Duke Dumont, Bob Moses, Ape Drums, Purple Disco Machine, and more all the time.
Everyone is playing these tracks:
Favorites that aren’t out yet:
CamelPhat & ARTBAT Feat. RHODES - For a Feeling (Extended Mix) (Played by Tinlicker)
Jamie xx - Idontknow (played by Four Tet)
Daniel Rateuke & Awen - Gold (Enoo Napa Remix) that not even Shazam or Google could find but a YouTube comment claims is “coming soon” (?!) (played by Black Coffee)
Favorites that aren’t on Spotify:
London Grammar - Strong (Xtetiqsoul remix) (played by Black Coffee)
Diego Krause - Minutia (played by Tinlicker, unless it’s a mis-ID. Shazam was misspelled too).
Read Moir Music
The longer I spend watching livestreamed music all weekend, the more I start to question if this is actually helping the artists I might otherwise be seeing live (or not discovering at all, tbh). Some journalism published in the past week tries to address some of these questions:
Katie Hawthorne in the Guardian asks, 'Instagram, how we feeling!' Can livestreaming replace cancelled gigs?
Cherie Hu wrote on her Patreon about the legal underbelly of livestreaming concerts and DJ sets, which is likely why we’re seeing many streams that only exist as live streams and not kept online, or with portions muted after the fact—sorting out the rights of who gets paid for the stream is not simple, and in many cases, not enforceable.
Cherie Hu also wrote for Pitchfork on How Livestreaming Is Bridging the Gap Between Bands and Fans During the Coronavirus Outbreak.
Somewhat related, April Clare Welsh asks, Should a fee-sharing model between DJs and producers be enforced in dance music?
