See Moir Music: July 2022

Still writing 2021 on things this far into 2022...

I'm continuing my trend of hardly going to shows anymore. Partially because COVID case rates make me nervous, partially because staying up late is tough, and partially because no shows lately have been compelling enough to get me excited about going out.

I ended up skipping the KC Lights set at Halcyon because my all-day outdoor event that same day made me very unenthused about standing at a show late at night. Cold War Kids at Stern Grove was already a stretch, and getting home from a trip the night before meant that I was super primed to stay home and sleep instead of trekking down there. I feel old but okay with it.

Where I’ll Be

I still won't be much of anywhere in the next month or so, so I've bolded the shows that I highly recommend OR the ones that I am going to in the future.

tl;dr I'll see you at the greek, overmono, and some festivals. Good luck deciding which show on August 5th to go to…

  • Fri 7/22 – Baauer and M. Bootyspoon at 1015 Folsom

  • Sat 7/23 – Diplo, Maya Jane Coles, Paul Woolford and more at the Menagerie Block Party at The Midway

  • Sun 7/24 – Goldroom at the Phoenix Hotel

    • Poolside vibes for a summer chill electronic vibes king. Look for his boat parties later this summer…

  • Sun 7/31 – VNSSA at the Phoenix Hotel

September

  • Wed 9/7 – Less than Jake and Bowling for Soup at the UC Theatre

    • I really just need to buy tickets to this show and admit to myself that both of these bands are super duper fun and would be so fun live. But also I've seen them both before so maybe I don't need to go. We'll see.

  • Thu 9/8 & Fri 9/9 – Cold Cave at the Chapel

  • Fri 9/9 – Placebo at The Warfield

  • Thu 9/14 – Lauv at the Greek Theatre

  • Sat 9/17 – Novo Amor at The Fillmore

    • Remains one of the best crowd vibes I've had at a live show, the Fillmore I expect will be even better. Recommended.

  • Wed 9/21 – The Avalanches at The Warfield

    • I think they're growing on me, but gosh this is quite a stretch of Wednesday shows.

  • Sat 9/24 & Sun 9/25 – Portola Music Festival with a fuckton of people, but my biased list of artists is: Flume, Jamie xx, Jungle, Fred Again.., Fatboy Slim, Caribou, Bicep (Live), The Avalanches, Romy, Ross from Friends, TSHA, George Fitzgerald, Dials, Chemical Brothers, MIA, Four Tet + Floating Points, Yaeji, Channel Tres, Ben Böhmer (Live), Drama, Keinemusik (&ME, Rampa, and Adam Port), Sofia Kourtesis, HAAi, Prospa, and more! at Pier 80. This list is a mix of who I've seen before and who I'll try to see, because obviously I'm going.

    • My must-see list is: Jamie xx, Caribou, Ross from Friends, TSHA, Keinemusik, Sofia Kourtesis, HAAi, Prospa, aka "in which Sarah attempts to hide from crowds"

  • Wed 9/28 – Lykke Li at The Warfield

  • Fri 9/30 – Broken Social Scene at Fox Theater

  • Fri 9/30 & Sat 10/1 – Odesza with Sylvan Esso and Elderbrook at Shoreline

October

  • Sat 10/1 – Bomba Estereo at the Greek Theatre

  • Sat 10/8 – Fisher Block Party

  • Sat 10/8 – Sonny Fodera at The Midway

  • Fri 10/14 – Overmono at Monarch

    • Really psyched and kinda surprised they're playing such a cozy venue.

  • Fri 10/14 – Sat 10/15 – Breakaway festival featuring Gryffin, Louis the Child, Big Wild, Tycho, Aluna, Snakehips, Whethan, Pluko and more at Oakland Arena parking lot

  • Sat 10/15 – Noise Pop 20th St Block Party

    • Now on Valencia. Disappointed that it's moving to a much bougier area of the Mission, but it makes sense given that they moved out of their HQ at 20th. I have low expectations tbh, but with La Cucina doing the food it will be tasty!

  • Sat 10/15 – Sun 10/16 – Day to Night Festival with Dom Dolla, Booka Shade, Jody Wisternoff, Felix Da Housecat, ARTBAT, Tinlicker, Qrion, Enamour, and more at Treasure Island

  • Mon 1017, Tue 10/18, Wed 10/19 – Beach Fossils at The Chapel

  • Tue 10/18 – The Mars Volta at The Warfield

  • Thu 10/20 – Bonobo (Live) and Tourist at the Greek Theatre

    • Psyched to see Tourist again, and I've heard excellent things about Bonobo live!

  • Sun 10/23 – Lil Nas X at Billy G

    • I would LOVE to see him live but tickets are ~*demand priced*~ so instead of costing $65 + fees they're listed at $220, or more or less at any given time. If it drops below $100 before the show I might go and chill in the balcony.

  • Sat 10/29 – Stephan Bodzin, Åme, and Laolu at Public Works

  • Sat 10/29 – Porter Robinson, RL Grime, Fred Again.., Hudson Mohawke, salute, and more at Second Sky Festival at Oakland Arena Grounds

    • Unbelievably psyched to see salute, and hey, it's BARTable!

Later

  • Fri 11/4 – The Knocks at Regency Ballroom

  • Sat 11/5 – Santigold at The Masonic

  • Sun 11/6 – TEED (Live) at the Indy

  • Mon 11/14 – Two Door Cinema Club at the Fox Theater

    • I think this is the third time they've played at the Fox since I moved out here.

  • Wed 11/16 – Tegan and Sara at The Fillmore

Other fun events

If you want to learn something at an event, consider:

  • Tue 7/26 – Michael Pollan at the Sydney Goldstein Theater with City Arts and Lectures

  • Thu 9/22 – You're Wrong About at Marines' Memorial Theater

Other notes

This article in Billboard covers the difficulty that producers have in getting paid… it's especially tough because based on the mess of different types of music royalties, producers are trying to recoup money from many different places for one work—unlike freelancers who typically need to wait for just one place to respond to an invoice. Definitely the sort of thing that collective action can help with, so I'm glad one producer mentioned a union!

Beyond digital blackface, Resident Advisor covers the exploitative habit of white producers sampling black artists, even using vocal samples that use the N-word.

Recent great releases

tbh the track I've been most obsessed with lately is the new Beyonce, Break My Soul, don't @ me it's a certified banger.

Other tracks I've enjoyed:

  • Fred Again.. - Jungle, Fred worked with Four Tet and brought out some garage/jungle vibes.

  • Banksia - It's Been Done, Local producer bringing out some vocal-forward house vibes, I like it.

  • Super Flu and Viktor Talking Machines - All da Ravers is an excellent track sampling a rave classic, Dune - Hardcore Vibes, which I didn't know until my raver friend told me. Have raver friends, friends.

  • I. Jordan - Always Been, even if I'm following Fred less closely, he highlights a lot of excellent producers and I. Jordan is one of them!

  • TSHA - Giving Up, give me everything by TSHA ever thank you

  • Bicep - Meli (II), I'm all for producers reworking existing tracks to make them even better

  • Jim-E Stack ft. Empress Of - Turn the Table, I've been waiting for this track since he played it live and I'm glad it's out.

  • There's a new two shell EP but I'll just be listening to home still.

  • Monkey Safari has a new Kami EP (is two songs an EP or a single?!?!) and both tracks are great. SoundCloud link (GO+), or Spotify for the rest of us.

  • MUNA has a new album out, and after I got used to the Carly Rae/HAIM-style vocal forward flat mixing of the tracks, I enjoyed Runner's High and Home By Now.

  • I rediscovered Finn's track I Know, I Know from 2019 and it's good enough that I had to include it here.

  • Four Tet put out Looking at Your Pager, which is excellent. If it doesn't hook you the first time, give it another listen or two. Scythe Master is also a good new single of his, put out on a random EP.

  • Super Flu also put out a (two song) EP with some good tracks, check it out.

  • O'Flynn put out a new song with Frazer Ray (fka Soundbwoy Killah) and it's a techier vibe than usual but I'm a fan.

I've been listening to SoundCloud Weekly more than Spotify Discover Weekly because it's way better, I highly recommend. Anytime DJ Counselling shows up I realize how much I like his tracks. Do a deep dive.
